Located in the very heart of Oxford, the King’s Arms is a pub with history. The site was originally occupied by buildings erected by Augustinian friars in 1268. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540, the land passed to the City of Oxford. A pub was opened in 1607 and has been a popular student haunt and local drinking spot ever since.
A local myth has it that the King’s Arms has the highest IQ per square foot of any pub or bar in the world. Students traditionally gathered in the pub to continue academic discussions. It was said that some dons held tutorials in the back bar as late as the 1970. Today, the outside seating to the front of the pub overlooks the Weston Library and the Sheldonian Theatre and is perfect for people watching.
