MILESTONES IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING TALK 1: DUTCH PAINTERS
March 24 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

With Alice Foster, Art Historian
The first in a series of three talks examining three traditions of landscape painting. Talk 1 focuses on Dutch painters..
In the 17th century, the Dutch painters were among the early responders to nature, celebrating it as a subject in its own right, and presenting a natural depiction of the landscape.
For the first time in Western art the weather was frequently alluded to, because it impinged on artists’ daily lives.
The paintings were often small-scale, because they were destined for the homes of the Dutch merchants. This talk will feature works by artists such as Avercamp, Cuyp and Ruisdael, and discuss others in our collection.
