Rare Books Summer School: Keynote Lecture The Cotton Genesis and Early Christian Art

July 8 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

About this event

This lecture examines the fifth century Cotton Genesis (BL Codex Cotton Otho B.IV), a major illuminated manuscript which now survives only as charred fragments after the 1731 Ashburnham House fire. New multispectral photography at the British Library has revealed interesting new information about the manuscript.

The lecture explores what these remnants reveal when compared with other early illustrated books and Genesis image cycles on materials like papyrus and cloth, enabling us to learn about the origins of the illustrated codex and the development of narrative imagery in early Christian art.

The lecture will be followed by refreshments.

Speaker

Professor Jaś Elsner
