Since April 2022\, 1859 participants have joined the project.A central focus of the talk will be (Almost) Ikebana\, an ongoing workshop series within The Gardening Drawing Club’s programme that respectfully yet humourously explores the art of Ikebana through drawing\, observation\, improvisation\, flower arranging\, conversations\, and tea. \nTo date\, the ‘(Almost) Ikebana’ workshop has included 17 free public editions\, alongside numerous additional workshops with primary and secondary school pupils\, university students\, and other communities. The series reimagines ikebana not as a fixed discipline\, but as an open\, inclusive practice that encourages attentiveness to materials\, deep ecology\, surroundings\, and transnationalism.The talk will also address the creation of the (Almost) Ikebana publication\, produced in December 2025 in a limited edition of 200 copies during Tagada Hoffbeck’s artist residency in the Fine Art department at Oxford Brookes University. Edited by Johanna and published by Poetic Pastel Press\, the publication extends the ethos of the workshops into print\, documenting processes\, drawings\, and new reflections that continue the project’s emphasis on slowness\, care\, ecology\, spirituality and collective creativity. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on one of the most urgent questions of our time: do we need an international AI Bill of Human Rights? \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the launch of a major new White Paper from the University of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI exploring one of the most urgent questions of our time: Do we need an international AI Bill of Human Rights? \nThe event will feature Yuval Shany\, former Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee and Inaugural Accelerator Fellow at the Institute\, who will make the case for a new bill to address critical gaps in existing international human rights law. The White Paper outlines seven foundational rights for the age of AI\, including: the right to access AI\, privacy protections\, anti-bias and fairness\, algorithmic transparency\, freedom from manipulation\, meaningful human decision-making and interaction\, and accountability for the use of AI. \nThese ideas will be examined and discussed by a distinguished panel of experts: \n\nRobert Spano\, former President of the European Court of Human Rights\nKate Jones\, CEO of the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum\nCaroline Green\, Director of Research at the Institute for Ethics in AI and a leading voice on the ethics of care\n\nThis timely discussion brings together law\, policy\, ethics\, and technology to explore how human rights can be protected—and reimagined—in an AI-driven world. Essential for policymakers\, legal professionals\, technologists\, researchers\, and anyone interested in the responsible governance of AI. DESCRIPTION:About this event\nJoin Richard Ovenden\, Bodley’s Librarian\, for an evening in conversation with journalist and venture investor Michael Moritz. \nMichael will discuss his new memoir\, ‘Ausländer’\, the story of his Jewish parents’ escape from Nazi Germany. \nA book signing and drinks reception will follow. \nAbout ‘Ausländer’\nNearly 90 years ago\, Michael Moritz’s mother and father fled Nazi Germany. Like many members of the Jewish community following World War II\, Michael grew up in the long shadow of his parents’ tragedy and grief. After his mother’s death\, Michael decided to revisit his parents’ history by exploring the documents she left behind. His investigation uncovered the tragic deaths of close family members in the Holocaust\, and his parents’ difficult escape from Germany as child refugees. \nIn his memoir\, ‘Ausländer’\, Michael vividly reconstructs his parents’ escape and exile from their homeland. While the Moritz family began a new life in Cardiff\, the idea of being an ‘Ausländer’ – ‘outsider’ – continues to haunt them. \nCasting this story against Trump’s America\, Michael cautions his readers that if it can happen somewhere\, it can happen anywhere. \nSpeakers\nSir Michael Moritz was born in Cardiff\, Wales\, in 1954. A former Time journalist and regular contributor to the Financial Times\, he is the author of several books\, including ‘The Little Kingdom’\, the story of Apple’s years as a private business. He was a partner in Sequoia Capital for 35 years and led the business between 1995 and 2012\, becoming one of the most successful investors of his generation. Together with his wife\, the author Harriet Heyman\, in 2001 he formed Crankstart\, a San Francisco-based foundation devoted to helping those who might otherwise be left behind. \nRichard Ovenden is Bodley’s Librarian and the Helen Hamlyn Director of the University of Oxford Libraries\, as well as Head of Gardens\, Libraries & Museums (GLAM)\, University of Oxford. \nEvent information\n\nThis event takes place in person in the Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre at the Weston Library. How to get here.\nThe Weston Library is wheelchair accessible. More about accessibility at our site.\nPlease note: no food or drink is allowed in the lecture theatre.
