SUMMARY:Pets & their People
DESCRIPTION:  11 March – 27 September 2026 \n ST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n Free admission\, no ticket required \nAbout the exhibition\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:The Architectures of Infestation by Abingdon & Witney College
DESCRIPTION:Venue\, Timing and Cost\n\nVenue:\n\nThe Turrill Sculpture Garden\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nSaturday\, 7 March 2026 to Saturday\, 25 April 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\nMon\, Fri – 9.30 – 5.00pm Tues\, Thurs 9.30 – 6.30pm Sat 9.30 – 4.00pm Closed Wed\, Sun\n\n\n\nCost:\n\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA striking new exhibition in the Turrill Sculpture Garden\, showcasing large scale sculptural works by Creative Futures (Level 1) and Foundation Art & Design students from Abingdon & Witney College.\nBringing together oversized insect sculptures and hand built ceramic watchtowers\, the exhibition explores themes of surveillance\, scale\, and the uneasy relationship between humans\, creatures\, and the structures we build.\nLevel 1 students took inspiration from bugs and specimens at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History\, enlarging tiny organisms into bold\, three foot long forms using wire\, modroc\, plaster\, and paint. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. Architectures of Infestation invites visitors to explore\, imagine\, and rethink the boundaries between the natural and the built. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nKatherine Shock Sculpture Co-ordintor 07922205946. kshock1@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Nicola Kelly ANYWHERE BUT HERE with Rachel Clarke
DESCRIPTION:Anywhere But Here is a powerful exposé of Britain’s broken asylum system and how it fails us all. \n\n\n\n\nAnywhere But Here \nEach year tens of thousands of people risk their lives to cross the Channel in small boats hoping to find safety in Britain. Yet the very system designed to protect them has all but collapsed. \nWith unique and unparalleled access\, award-winning journalist and former Home Office insider Nicola Kelly takes us behind the scenes of the small boats crisis for the first time. \nWe follow the under-resourced coastguard overseeing search and rescue operations in the Channel. The decision-makers hired from McDonald’s and Aldi to conduct ‘life and death’ asylum interviews. The immigration barristers securing last-minute reprieves for deportees who narrowly escaped death. And we step inside the Home Office corridors as ministers and advisors respond to emerging crises and scandals\, from Windrush to the Rwanda plan. \nAt its heart are the stories of war-torn arrivals\, lone teenagers and trafficked women attempting to settle in cities\, towns and villages across the UK. We travel to meet them\, exploring where they have fled from and why\, and the response of local communities to their new neighbours. \nSituated on the beaches and the ports\, in the hotels\, the courtrooms and the detention centres where the futures of those affected unfold\, this is a searing investigation into one of the most urgent issues and shocking injustices of our time. \nNicola Kelly \nNicola Kelly is an award-winning journalist and writer focused on UK immigration and asylum. \nHer reporting regularly appears in The Guardian\, The Observer\, The Independent\, New Statesman\, Byline Times and elsewhere. \nBefore moving into journalism\, she was a diplomat\, posted to Brussels and Istanbul\, with stints in Beirut and Rome and secondments to the No 10 Press Office and the Home Office. \nHer reporting has been referenced in several legal challenges against Conservative Home Secretaries\, as well as submissions and human rights reports. In October 2023\, she gave evidence to the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee on the government’s failed Afghan resettlement schemes\, which was drawn upon in the Afghanistan Withdrawal Inquiry and in questioning to Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad. \nIn 2024 Nicola won the News Media Award at the Scottish Media Awards and she received a special mention at the One World Media Awards for International Journalist of the Year. She also won Best News Story and Best Feature at the Freelance Journalism Awards the same year. In 2022\, she was highly commended for Campaigning Journalist of the Year and shortlisted for Freelance Journalist of the Year at the Society of Editors Media Freedom Awards. \nNicola regularly features on the BBC\, LBC and elsewhere as a media commentator on UK asylum issues\, as well as panel discussions\, podcasts\, journalism conferences and guest lectures at universities across the UK. She is a mentor at the Refugee Journalism Project\, a Fellow of the International Women’s Media Foundation and the European Journalism Fund and a member of both the Frontline Freelance Register and the NUJ. \nRachel Clarke \nDr Rachel Clarke is an NHS palliative care doctor\, former television journalist and the award-winning author of four Sunday Times bestselling books including THE STORY OF A HEART (winner of the 2025 Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction & shortlisted for the 2024 Baillie Gifford Prize)\, DEAR LIFE (shortlisted for the 2020 Costa Biography Award & longlisted for the 2020 Baillie Gifford Prize) and BREATHTAKING (adapted into a major television series broadcast by ITVX in 2024 & nominated for a Royal Television Society Award for Best Limited Series 2025). \nRachel writes for the Guardian\, Sunday Times\, New Statesman and Lancet among others. Her television and radio appearances include BBC Question Time\, BBC Newsnight\, Channel 4 News and BBC Woman’s Hour.

SUMMARY:Idlewild
DESCRIPTION:Fresh from the success of their eponymously titled 10th studio album\, Idlewild head back out on the road. \nInitially gaining a fanbase and reputation in the late 90’s for their raucous and chaotic live performances\, Idlewild’s punk rock sound evolved naturally over several albums into a unique\, richly melodic alternative rock. Later albums introduced elements of both art rock and folk rock to their classic sound\, always underpinned by singer Roddy Woomble’s poetic lyrics and consummate gift for melody.

SUMMARY:Sara Wheeler JAN MORRIS : A LIFE
DESCRIPTION:Sara Wheeler introduces her captivating new biography of the legendary writer Jan Morris\, published on the centenary of Morris’s birth. \n\n\n\n\nJan Morris : A Life \nShe was the twentieth century. Who wouldn’t want to write her biography? \nWhen Jan Morris joined the 1953 Everest expedition and was first to get news of the ascent back to London\, she became the most famous journalist in the world. So began a glittering career covering the Eichmann trial\, interviewing Che Guevara and scooping the story of Suez collusion. Morris transitioned in the early seventies and documented the experience in Conundrum. She was a pioneer and her books\, including Venice and the Pax Britannica trilogy\, have inspired readers across the globe. \nHere\, renowned travel writer and biographer Sara Wheeler uncovers the complexity of this twentieth-century icon to reveal a mosaic of contradictions. Morris’s work conjured the spirit of place\, yet her late masterpiece Trieste celebrates ‘the meaning of nowhere’; she was a Welsh nationalist who wasn’t Welsh; a preacher of kindness with a cruel side. This is a portrait of an astonishing life\, and a scintillating story of longing\, travel and never reaching home. \n‘A breathtakingly good read. Coherent\, comprehensive and compulsive.’ MICHAEL PALIN‘ \nA superb achievement . . . It is hard to imagine this biography will ever be superseded.’ COLIN THUBRON \n‘Wonderful – witty . . . worthy of its subject.’ PAUL THEROUX \n‘A masterly biography.’ SIMON JENKINS \nSara Wheeler \nSara Wheeler is a highly acclaimed British writer\, who is perhaps best known for her accounts of polar regions and her international best-seller Terra Incognita. She has also written about the US\, Russia and other countries\, and has most recently published Glowing Still\, a memoir of her life on the road. The authorised biography of Jan Morris is her latest book.

DESCRIPTION:To mark their 10th anniversary\, Oxford-based theatre company and North Wall Creative Associates Mandala Theatre present a double bill of new work: \nTrojan Women by Karim Alrawi\nPerformed by Mandala Young Company \nThe Trojan Women is one of the most powerful indictments of war ever written. In this new version Karim Alrawi gives the play a twenty-first century lens. Focusing on superimposing the Trojan war on conflicts throughout history\, the play is layered with women’s experience of conflict from Troy to one of the most harrowing conflicts of our time – Gaza. Despite their oppression\, we see into the hearts and minds of these women and their children\, their dignity\, their pain\, their loss and their love\, as the collateral damage of men’s war and greed. Mandala Young Company turn this classic drama into a moving and relevant story exploring the humanity\, dignity and courage of women and children in impossible situations. \nIncarcerating Eve by Yasmin Sidhwa\nPerformed by Mandala Theatre Company \nEve has existed since the dawn of humanity\, every woman\, every age\, every struggle. She is the indigenous woman\, the pregnant teenager\, the survivor\, the accused witch\, the silenced voice blamed for humanity’s fall. \nAcross history\, Eve has been oppressed and condemned\, but no more. She is awakening as the original Mother Goddess\, Inanna: creator\, nurturer\, and keeper of wisdom. Eve’s rise is what the world needs now\, if only we can free her. \nPowerful and provocative\, Mandala Theatre’s new play Incarcerating Eve confronts the devastating effects of suppressing the Feminine on families\, society\, and the natural world — and offers a bold vision of renewal and hope. \nAge guidance: 14+ \n\n\n\n\nMandala Theatre 10th Anniversary Double Bill\n15 April 2026 – 7:00 pm\nTicketsStandard: £16\nPay More: £20\nPay Less: £12

SUMMARY:Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra - Nicola Benedetti
DESCRIPTION:The exceptional Nicola Benedetti joins Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B minor and Enigma Variations in collaboration with Oxford Festival of the Arts\nElgar Violin Concerto in B minor\, Op. 61\nElgar Enigma Variations\, Op. 36 \nNicola Benedetti violin\nMarios Papadopoulos conductor \nThe great violinist Fritz Kreisler rated Edward Elgar alongside Beethoven and Brahms. When Kreisler said as much in a 1905 newspaper interview\, Elgar picked up the threads of a concerto he’d begun nearly two decades earlier. The piece he finished five years later\, performed in this concert by the exceptional Nicola Benedetti\, is as epic and emotive as it is personal and elusive\, ‘enshrining the soul’ of an unknown person. A more famous enigma is found in Elgar’s dazzlingly virtuosic set of variations for orchestra. His Enigma Variations are portraits of friends and celebrations of orchestral panache. But they also offer glimpses into the soul of an artist who might have been careful not to reveal his secrets but was never afraid to show his emotions. \nThis performance is brought to the Sheldonian Theatre in collaboration with Oxford Festival of the Arts. \n\nPre-concert talk given by Sir Nicholas Kenyon at 18:30 – Elgar the ‘great English progressivist’\nEdward Elgar is often thought of as a conservative\, but Richard Strauss hailed him as adventurous and forward-looking. Nicholas Kenyon explores Elgar as he created pioneering 20th-century music and became a composer of unforgettable masterpieces. \n  \n\n  \nTicket Information \n\nFull price tickets: £20\, £32\, £42\, £60\n£5 tickets for students/under-18s in the Upper Galleries and £5 off any other price band\, 50% off for Disabled/Carer tickets (bookable by phone only)\nAge range: 6+\nDoors open at 19:00\nThis concert will be 120 minutes with an interval\nLatecomers to be permitted at an appropriate pause in the music\nFor ticketing queries\, please contact 01865 980980
