DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. This book paints a vivid picture of resistance to hatred and extremism across the generations. \n\n\n\n\nResisting Nazism \nNazism has always faced resistance: from the German artists who caricatured the Nazis in the 1920s\, or the man who infiltrated the SS to try and expose the Holocaust in the 1940s\, or the people who uncovered former Nazis as part of a groundbreaking documentary in the 1970s. Resisting Nazism is the first book to connect such stories\, painting a vivid picture of resistance to hatred and extremism across the generations. \nBuilt on original interviews with the people involved\, their families\, and their colleagues\, as well as deep research\, this book is a response to far-right populist threats and antisemitism that increasingly resemble the Nazi past. Each of its twelve chapters tells a different story of resistance. Sometimes\, these stories involve incredible daring and enormous risk – but they also show that resistance can begin with something as simple as writing your ideas down or showing solidarity with the oppressed. \nLuke Berryman \nLuke Berryman is the Founder and CEO of The Ninth Candle\, a Chicago-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that helps schools to improve Holocaust education. They run educational programs for students and professional development programs for teachers\, all free of charge. Luke has written about the Holocaust\, and antisemitism for newspapers including The Chicago Tribune\, USA Today\, The New York Daily News\, and others\, and for pedagogy journals like Education Week and Chalkbeat.

But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:FREE EXHIBITION\n\n\n\n\nOpens 11 Apr 2026 \nGallery 29 \nAdmission is FREE \n\nThis is the first exhibtion to focus on photographs and negatives in the Ashmolean\, and as such features previously unseen photographs of India by Colonel Eugene Clutterbuck Impey (1830–1904). \nA member of the East India Company\, Impey arrived in India in 1851 and took part in military actions during the Indian Uprising of 1857. After the British Crown took control in 1858 following the Uprising\, he worked as a political agent until returning to Britain in 1878. \n  \n \nStereoscopic image of a tiger with tripod shadow\, Colonel Eugene Impey\, 1858-1865\, albumen photographic print on paper © Ashmolean Museum \n\n  \nImpey’s photographs reflect British imperial interests\, showcasing portraits of colonial officers and Indians\, as well as staged scenes of daily life\, clothing\, religious sites\, animals\, and landscapes. \nThese images often reinforced stereotypes with the aim to justify colonial efforts. Photography\, which gained popularity after its debut in 1839\, was used to highlight cultural differences. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Venue\, Timing and Cost\n\nVenue:\n\nThe Turrill Sculpture Garden\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nSaturday\, 7 March 2026 to Saturday\, 25 April 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\nMon\, Fri – 9.30 – 5.00pm Tues\, Thurs 9.30 – 6.30pm Sat 9.30 – 4.00pm Closed Wed\, Sun\n\n\n\nCost:\n\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA striking new exhibition in the Turrill Sculpture Garden\, showcasing large scale sculptural works by Creative Futures (Level 1) and Foundation Art & Design students from Abingdon & Witney College.\nBringing together oversized insect sculptures and hand built ceramic watchtowers\, the exhibition explores themes of surveillance\, scale\, and the uneasy relationship between humans\, creatures\, and the structures we build.\nLevel 1 students took inspiration from bugs and specimens at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History\, enlarging tiny organisms into bold\, three foot long forms using wire\, modroc\, plaster\, and paint. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nMake full use of the Stitching Kitchen Studio and fabric stash to get creative with Fabric and Thread\, to create a piece of textile art. \n\n\n\n\nMake full use of the Stitching Kitchen Studio and fabric stash to get creative with Fabric and Thread. Using one of my designs as inspiration or perhaps working from your own photo or sketch you will create a piece of textile art from the wide variety of fabric textures\, embellishments and threads. \nUsing the sewing machines in either sewing or free motion mode you can stitch layered fabrics. Further embellishment to add more texture and depth using a variety of yarns\, threads and beads\, buttons and sequins can be added by either hand or machine stitch.\nThe finished piece can be framed to hang on a wall or incorporated into another project. \nWhat you will learn/achieve \nHow to use the sewing machines to add texture to your design.\nVarious methods of fabric appliqué\, using various layering techniques and adhesives\nTap into Hannah’s encyclopaedic knowledge of textile art methods. \nWhat’s included \nTuition: full instruction and support in a small class (maximum of 6).\nUse of our Pfaff and Janome machines in Stitching Kitchen’s fully equipped studio.\nAll materials and patterns are provided.
