SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Dunhuang and the Silk Roads in UK collections Stewardship\, digital discovery and collaboration
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nJoin us for a lecture focusing on the digital discovery of manuscripts\, paintings\, prints\, textiles and other objects discovered in Dunhuang and sites in northwest China\, dating mainly from the 5th to 11th centuries\, now held in the British Library and the British Museum. The Bodleian Libraries preserve the extensive manuscript notes\, diaries and archaeological fieldnotes of Sir Marc Aurel Stein who collected this material in the early 20th century. \nBy bringing together curatorial experts from separately held yet interconnected collections and archives\, the lecture will offer an overview of the Stein Collection’s formation\, its dispersal across different institutions\, and the scope of the items involved. It will also present current stewardship\, from conservation and digitisation work to online access and partnerships such as the International Dunhuang Programme (IDP). These initiatives aim to support more holistic understandings of these collections as well as the diverse histories\, cultures\, languages and societies along the Silk Roads. \nThe Digital East Asia Lectures are co-hosted by the Centre for Digital Scholarship and the Asian and Middle Eastern Collections at the Bodleian Libraries. The event has been generously supported by the Chung Hon Dak Fund. \nSpeakers\nMélodie Doumy is the Lead Curator of Chinese collections (Stein and Hoernle) and Manager of the International Dunhuang Programme at the British Library. \nLuk Yu-ping is Head of the China section and the Basil Gray Curator of Chinese Paintings\, Prints\, and Central Asian Collections in the Asia Department at the British Museum. \nEvent information\n\nThis talk is available to attend both in-person and online.\n\nAttend in person\n\nYou can attend this event in person. It takes place in the Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre at the Weston Library.\nThe Weston Library is wheelchair accessible. Find out more about accessibility at our site.\nPlease note: only bottled water is permitted in the lecture theatre. No food or other drinks are allowed.\n\nAttend online\n\nYou can also register to attend this event online via Zoom. You will receive joining instructions for the Zoom webinar in your order confirmation email.\n\n    Free\, booking required.

SUMMARY:We Could be Here a While
DESCRIPTION:Age\n12+\nDuration\n1hr 10mins\nInterval\nNo\nWarning\nContains references to war and brief discussions of mental health\nVenue\nBurton Taylor Studio\n\nTickets £8/£6\n\n\n\n\nUniversity of Oxford Student Season: Hilary Term 2026 \nBy Charlotte Ward \nIn the Kentish village of Lower Hempstead\, June 1942\, residents crowd into the communal air-raid shelter as bombers thunder overhead. With little to do but wait\, the villagers throw themselves into the nearest distraction: meddling in Louise’s love life. Add an intrusive pigeon\, an over-eager Home Guard recruit\, and the worrying possibility of an unexploded bomb upstairs\, and chaos quickly follows. \nThis piece of new student writing offers a warm\, witty take on community\, romance\, and resilience in wartime Britain.

DESCRIPTION:Elvana is the world’s finest Elvis tribute to Nirvana! From the bowels of Disgraceland\, rock ‘n’ roll icons of the afterlife are raised from the dead. Rock ‘n’ roll meets grunge as Elvis fronts Nirvana and gives the band the front man it’s been missing since 94. \nElvana tear through Nirvana’s catalogue whilst splicing in grunged up sections of the king of rock ‘n’ roll’s finest moments\, culminating in a whopper mash up of overdrive and old school rockabilly. \nIt smells like cheeseburgers and teen spirit\, daddy-o!

We have since opened it to all goalkeepers and built great relationships with professional clubs. Since the inception of our trial days two years ago\, we’ve been instrumental in turning the dreams of numerous goalkeepers into reality. \nThree goalkeepers have been signed by Brighton\, two each by Hull City and Reading\, and one each by Portsmouth\, Barnsley\, Bristol City and Oxford United after being spotted at our trial days. The most recent one\, Nottingham Forest signed Charlie in October after getting spotted on our trial day. Three of these goalkeepers\, like Zach\, have been called up to the England setup since signing. One keeper secured a scholarship at Colchester United\, and Chelsea Ladies signed a girl after being identified at our trial days. These success stories are a testament to the opportunities we provide\, even for those who might have thought their chance had gone. \nAll your child might need this opportunity\, and they’ll have a great time doing it! \nOn the trial day\, your child can showcase their talent and have lots of fun doing it. Plus\, experience playing at some fantastic facilities. \nWhat have you got to lose? \nSells Pro Training will provide a link between the professional and grassroots game\, creating opportunities for students to meet and train with top professional keepers. \nWe will be the first steps in developing the goalkeepers of the future with the aim of creating pathways for other students into coaching\, scholarships or a high level of football. \nVia our close links to the professional game\, our goalkeepers will be given a chance to be seen by top clubs. \n• Professional facilities • Proven results • Professional coaching • Direct contact with professional football clubs • Showcase sessions designed to help you shine • Friendly approach to the day • Feedback to help you develop \nPremier League Academy Goalkeeping Coach“Having attended Sells residential camps and sessions\, I have been very impressed with the level of quality coaching the young goalkeepers receive\, as well as the environment which supports learning and enjoyment.“The content of the sessions not only challenges the goalkeepers but also replicates the demands of the modern game.“The attention to detail on all aspects of the camp was tremendous.“The care and support provided for each young goalkeepers\, on both a personal and goalkeeping level were second to none.” \nUnder 23 Championship Goalkeeper Coach“Kids smiling and having fun is always the first thing I think of after attending Matt and his team’s events.“The facilities sourced are top class\, and the content and learning that goes on is my opinion is excellent.“The environment they create together\, with the care and effort they all put into each child is admirable\, and I always look forward to attending their events.” \nChampionship Academy Goalkeeping Coach“I just wanted to say a big thank you for having me last night.“It was great to see so many goalkeepers and chat to all the staff\, and it looked a fantastic operation.“To see so many goalkeepers flying around as they were shows what a great job you guys are doing!”
