SUMMARY:Song of Myself (Display)
DESCRIPTION:Song of Myself\, 1995\, Tom Phillips RA (1937–2022)\, wire\, 360 x 180 cm.\nCredit: Estate of Tom Phillips CBE RA \nTom Phillips described Song of Myself as “an attempt to list the various identities that go to make a single artistic life”. The work borrows its title from a poem in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Its beginning is based on the confessional Anglo-Saxon poem\, The Seafarer\, which Phillips first came across as an undergraduate at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford. \nWithin the work\, the alert reader will find further references\, direct or cryptic\, to Homer\, Plato\, Dante\, Cervantes\, Shakespeare\, Marvell\, Conrad\, R. L. Stevenson; to the music of Wagner and Robert Schumann; and to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. The text is littered with echoes of Phillips’s own artistic preoccupations: as a painter\, calligrapher\, user of stencils and maker of books. \nPhillips first made a pencil drawing of the text\, then worked with the fabricator Leo Verryt to realise the work in wire\, as a hanging poem. Other versions of the text exist\, one in a series of paintings called Curriculum Vitae (No XX\, 1992)\, and another in Self Portrait in Silver (2004). Phillips writes: “The unity of the piece in which letters are tortured into cooperation hopes to reflect an overall homogeneity in the spirit of its maker”. \nThe Bodleian Libraries also has the Tom Phillips archive in our collection.

DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE CULTURE CARE\n\n\n\n\nFREE EXHIBITION –  opens 28 Mar 2026\nGallery 8 \n\nThis is the fifth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\nThis exhibition showcases the work of Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat\, who draws inspiration from the Sundarbans\, the largest mangrove forest in the world\, and the Ashmolean collections to address the climate crisis. \nHer art reflects on environmental issues and the interconnectedness of nature and humanity\, especially in Bangladesh\, where the Sundarbans\, faces threats from climate change. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Venue\, Timing and Cost\n\nVenue:\n\nThe Turrill Sculpture Garden\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nSaturday\, 7 March 2026 to Saturday\, 25 April 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\nMon\, Fri – 9.30 – 5.00pm Tues\, Thurs 9.30 – 6.30pm Sat 9.30 – 4.00pm Closed Wed\, Sun\n\n\n\nCost:\n\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA striking new exhibition in the Turrill Sculpture Garden\, showcasing large scale sculptural works by Creative Futures (Level 1) and Foundation Art & Design students from Abingdon & Witney College.\nBringing together oversized insect sculptures and hand built ceramic watchtowers\, the exhibition explores themes of surveillance\, scale\, and the uneasy relationship between humans\, creatures\, and the structures we build.\nLevel 1 students took inspiration from bugs and specimens at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History\, enlarging tiny organisms into bold\, three foot long forms using wire\, modroc\, plaster\, and paint. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Every year a group of 6-8 aspiring photographers works with artist Elina Medley to create images using digital SLR cameras and then to curate an exhibition of photography. \nLast summer they worked in the studio as well as the streets and parks of Oxford to experiment with different subject matter and approaches to image-making. Over four days they built on their technical and creative skills and discovered the subjects they love to photograph. \nDuring the October half term\, they immersed themselves in several exhibitions of photography and learnt so much about how to curate their own exhibition. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Mary Knowland: Lines of Enquiry
DESCRIPTION:Mary Knowland grew up surrounded by art; her father was a painter however her initial training was in ceramics with Robin Welch and then at Harrow School of Art. After many years exhibiting and selling\, she returned\, via a course in textiles\, to her drawing and painting roots but has more recently included ceramics in her practice. \nThis collection of work offers us insights into her process of enquiry through line and a variety of media\, working with the human form\, the rhythms of the coast\, the simplicity of everyday objects and natural forms. \nTwo approaches to making drawings and paintings will be apparent. Consciously controlled mark-making and brush strokes verging on the abstract\, sit alongside a much freer approach where she is not looking at the subject while the work is in progress\, yet capturing the essence of the subject. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Starts Tue 24 Feb 2026\, 10.30am–1pm\n\n\n\n\nFULLY BOOKED\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA series of six practical half-day workshops in the Ashmolean Learning Studio \nWorkshops take place every Tuesday morning on:\n24 Feb\, 3 Mar\, 10 Mar\, 17 Mar\, 24 Mar\, 31 Mar 2026 \nTickets are £300 for the full course. Booking is essential. \nPlease note these workshops are now fully booked. \n\nWith artist John Somerscales \n  \nTaking inspiration from the natural landscape\, professional artist John Somerscales will help you learn how to create watercolours in the right way\, while having fun. \nIn these practical sessions you will be guided through all the major watercolour techniques. You will be shown each stage of the watercolour process to help you form a solid grounding\, from which you can go on to produce your own successful and impressive watercolour paintings. \n \nImprovised Landscape watercolour by John Somerscales \n\n  \nTechniques covered will include learning about graduated and wet-in-wet washes\, and you will look at glazing\, using the dry brush technique and how to make descriptive and textural marks with the brush including ideas on how to create skies and trees. \nAfter some time spent on colour mixing\, you will gradually work towards putting all these elements together to create simple but loose and effective landscapes. \nAll materials provided. Book below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe second talk in our series examining traditions of landscape painting\, focuses on the British Romantics of the 19th century. \nThe British Romantic painters in the early 19th century captured nature as a visual homage to God’s creation\, and on a big scale. \nTheir aim was to express the power of nature in all its forms ~ countryside\, mountains\, sea. Like the 17th-century Dutch painters they made the weather\, often stormy and untamed\, a focus of their artworks. Mankind sometimes appeared insignificant and vulnerable in these images. Artists like Turner and Constable will be discussed and with reference to their works in our collection. \n \nBoscastle\, Cornwall\, J.M.W.
