SUMMARY:You Got Me
DESCRIPTION:Tickets £8/£6 \n\n\n\n\n\nAge\n16+\nDuration\n1hr\nInterval\nNo\nWarning\nContains depictions of memory loss and mental illness\, includes strong language \nUse of strobe lighting\nVenue\nBurton Taylor Studio\n\n\n\n \nUniversity of Oxford Student Season: Hilary Term 2026 \nBy Oliver Martin \nAlex and River are stuck in a room. They don’t know how they got in\, or how to get out. Although optimistic at first\, when they notice their memories of the outside world fading\, and a mysterious figure observing them\, they begin to suspect something is wrong. \nSoon\, the pair are losing their wits\, trapped in conversations they’ve already had\, games with rules nobody can remember\, and the hope of escape looks increasingly bleak… \nA heartfelt\, tragicomic exploration of memory and identity\, Oliver Martin’s new play You Got Me explores what connects us to others\, and what ultimately drags us apart.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Charlie Hutchison: Life of a Black British anti-fascist'
DESCRIPTION:Hear about the remarkable life of Oxfordshire-born Charlie Hutchison: the only known Black British man to fight in the Spanish Civil War. \n\n\n\n\n‘Charlie Hutchison: Life of a Black-British anti-fascist from Oxfordshire’ \nBorn in Eynsham in the outskirts of Oxford\, Charlie Hutchison was raised in foster care and then an orphanage. Despite these difficult beginnings\, he went on to lead a remarkable life: as a young man\, he became involved in politics and trade unions and fought against the British Union of Fascists at the 1936 Battle of Cable Street. \nLater that year\, Charlie enlisted as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the anti-fascist forces\, joining approximately 2\,500 volunteers from the British Isles. He returned to the UK in 1939. During the Second World War\, he served across Britain\, the Middle East\, and in mainland Europe with a unit delivering life-saving supplies to Nazi concentration camp survivors. \nCharlie later started a family and lived the rest of his life in the south of England\, rarely talking about his wartime experiences. It is only in recent years that information about his remarkable life has been rediscovered\, with research and school projects dedicated to preserving Charlie’s memory and honoring his legacy. MOX awarded a Peter McQuitty Bursary to local historian Dan Poole to carry out research on Charlie’s life\, and we are excited to welcome Dan back to MOX to hear about his latest findings. \nTickets cost £6 and are available online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or at the Museum shop. Tickets for this event also include access to our Galleries. \nComplimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. \nSales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, schools workshops\, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. \nDan Poole is a historian of 20th century Britain and a team-member of Uncomfortable Oxford and the Oxford IBMT\, and his research into Charlie Hutchison was funded and supervised by the Museum of Oxford. He is currently a post-graduate student of Oxford University. \nScaffolding at Oxford Town Hall: \nFrom August 2025\, scaffolding will be in place outside Oxford Town Hall. Both entrances to the Town Hall (main steps and level access entrance) will remain fully open and accessible while these essential maintenance works are carried out. More information can be found on our Plan Your Visit page. \nAccess: \nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \nAccessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. Please contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. Further access information can be found on our page dedicated to access at the museum. \nPhoto consent: \nPlease be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed\, please let a member of staff know during the event.

SUMMARY:Alexander Larman LAZARUS with Philip Clark
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with the 10th anniversary of the death of Davis Bowie\, Alexander Larman discusses his biography\, Lazarus with Philip Clark \n\n\n\n\nLazarus : The Second Coming of David Bowie \nWhen David Bowie died on 10 January 2016\, aged 69\, his death was greeted with the greatest display of public mourning since Princess Diana three decades before. \nTwenty-five years before\, Bowie appeared to be washed up. His Eighties career had been a slow descent into self-parody\, his attempts to diversify into hard rock with the had been disastrous\, and the art-rock music with which he had made his name was badly out of fashion. The Thin White Duke needed a miracle if he was not only going to be able to assume his rightful place at the top of the rock music firmament\, but even to continue his career. And a miracle – a resurrection from the dead – is precisely what happened. \nLazarus: The Second Coming of David Bowie is the first biography of Bowie that tells the full and candid story of what happened in between those two apparently unbridgeable points. With new and exclusive interviews with the musicians\, filmmakers and cultural figures who worked with and befriended Bowie throughout this period\, Lazarus is the definitive account of the previously overlooked and fascinating latter half of a great and distinguished career. A career that climaxed with his final masterpiece\, Blackstar\, and the unprecedented theatrical flourish of his departure from the stage as he passed into legend. \nAlexander Larman \nAlexander Larman is the author of several historical and biographical titles. His most recent book\, Power and Glory\, the third and final instalment in his Windsors trilogy\, following The Crown in Crisis and The Windsors at War\, was published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in March 2024. His first book\, Blazing Star: The Life and Times of John Wilmot\, 2nd Earl of Rochester\, was published by Head of Zeus in 2014\, and his second\, Restoration\, a social history of the year 1666\, was published in April 2016. His third\, Byron’s Women\, came out in September 2016 and was shortlisted for the Elma Dangerfield Prize. \nHe is books editor of The Spectator’sworld edition and is a contributing editor to The Criticmagazine. He has a monthly book review column in The Observer and writes regularly about literature and the arts for publications including Prospect\, The Times\, Engelsberg Ideas and the Daily Telegraph. \nPhilip Clark \nPhilip Clark is a music journalist who has written about classical music\, modern composition\, jazz\, free improvisation and rock music for many leading publications including The Wire\, Gramophone\, Classic FM Magazine\, MOJO\, Jazzwise\, The Guardian\, Financial Times\, London Review of Books\, Prospect and New York Review of Books. \n\n£6 – £25

SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. The finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. Please see below for the dates. \n\nExhibition Opening\nThursday 12 February 6-8pm\nPlease join us for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition\nFree event / no booking required \nMeet the Artists\nMonday 16 February 2-3.30pm & Saturday 28 February 2-3.30pm\nJoin the artists for a tea\, talk and an informal tour of the exhibition\nFree event / Book Tickets \nDrawing workshops at The Ashmolean\nFamily workshop: Thursday 19 February 2-4pm\n£17 for 1 adult & 2 children / Book Tickets \nAdult workshop: Wednesday 4 March 11am – 3pm\n£27 per person / Book Tickets
