SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. The finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. Please see below for the dates. \n\nExhibition Opening\nThursday 12 February 6-8pm\nPlease join us for drinks to celebrate the opening of this exhibition\nFree event / no booking required \nMeet the Artists\nMonday 16 February 2-3.30pm & Saturday 28 February 2-3.30pm\nJoin the artists for a tea\, talk and an informal tour of the exhibition\nFree event / Book Tickets \nDrawing workshops at The Ashmolean\nFamily workshop: Thursday 19 February 2-4pm\n£17 for 1 adult & 2 children / Book Tickets \nAdult workshop: Wednesday 4 March 11am – 3pm\n£27 per person / Book Tickets

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Dead as a Dodo: The Haunted Heritage of Extinction
DESCRIPTION:Tickets – FREE \n(Book Online) \nAbout the event\nIn the halls of natural history museums all over the world\, you can peer through the glass and come face-to-face with the ghosts of extinction. Extinction has been going on as long as there has been biological life\, in fact over 99% of all species that have ever existed on Earth are extinct-but extinction usually happen at a slow place. We are now\, however\, living through the Sixth Mass Extinction\, with species rapidly going extinct because of human actions. These are the ghosts of extinction in the museum. \nIn this talk\, based on her new book ‘Ghosts Behind Glass’\, Dolly Jørgensen takes visitors with her to encounter the extinct. Journeying through the halls of over 80 museums worldwide\, she identified trends\, similarities\, and differences in display techniques and storytelling with remains of the extinct. In conversation with the Oxford University Museum of Natural History’s own displays\, listeners will learn about the challenges of encountering extinction and the potential for them to raise awareness of the connections between humans and nonhumans over time. Dolly’s talk will be followed by a chance to meet her and view some of the iconic\, now extinct species\, that the Museum holds and buy signed copies of her latest book. \nAbout the speaker\nDolly Jørgensen is Professor of History at the University of Stavanger in Norway\, specializing in environmental history and environmental humanities.
