SUMMARY:What's On Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - An Oxford Playhouse Production
DESCRIPTION:An Oxford Playhouse Production\n\nBy Edward Albee \nDirected by Mike Tweddle \nOne evening. Two couples. No place to hide. \nWelcome to the small hours at George and Martha’s – the alcohol is flowing\, the gloves are off\, and the games are just getting started. \nEdward Albee’s multi award-winning play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a wild\, gripping and darkly funny exploration of the lies we tell to protect ourselves. \nDisillusioned university professor George and his wife Martha invite an unwitting younger couple\, Nick and Honey\, into their home. It’s not long before things spiral\, dragging everyone into the heart of a tempestuous relationship. What starts as a spur of the moment nightcap turns into psychological show down. \nEdward Albee’s masterpiece of raw intensity and searing insight is directed by Oxford Playhouse Artistic Director Mike Tweddle. Don’t miss one of the most explosive nights in modern theatre. \n\nAge\n14+\nDuration\n3hrs 15mins\nInterval\nYes (performance includes two intervals)\nWarning\nContains strong language\, violence and adult themes\nVenue\nOxford Playhouse\nAdditional Information\nArtwork by Patryk Hardziej

SUMMARY:Song of Myself (Display)
DESCRIPTION:Song of Myself\, 1995\, Tom Phillips RA (1937–2022)\, wire\, 360 x 180 cm.\nCredit: Estate of Tom Phillips CBE RA \nTom Phillips described Song of Myself as “an attempt to list the various identities that go to make a single artistic life”. The work borrows its title from a poem in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Its beginning is based on the confessional Anglo-Saxon poem\, The Seafarer\, which Phillips first came across as an undergraduate at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford. \nWithin the work\, the alert reader will find further references\, direct or cryptic\, to Homer\, Plato\, Dante\, Cervantes\, Shakespeare\, Marvell\, Conrad\, R. L. Stevenson; to the music of Wagner and Robert Schumann; and to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. The text is littered with echoes of Phillips’s own artistic preoccupations: as a painter\, calligrapher\, user of stencils and maker of books. \nPhillips first made a pencil drawing of the text\, then worked with the fabricator Leo Verryt to realise the work in wire\, as a hanging poem. Other versions of the text exist\, one in a series of paintings called Curriculum Vitae (No XX\, 1992)\, and another in Self Portrait in Silver (2004). Phillips writes: “The unity of the piece in which letters are tortured into cooperation hopes to reflect an overall homogeneity in the spirit of its maker”. \nThe Bodleian Libraries also has the Tom Phillips archive in our collection.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Sounds in Stone
DESCRIPTION:Tickets – £5 (Book Online)\nAbout the event\n‘Sounds in Stone’ is a concert inspired by the museum’s collections\, with music reflecting the story of life\, our planet\, and the universe beyond. Centered on voice and piano\, with special arrangements for oboe\, viola\, and violin\, the programme spans classical and contemporary works—from Copland’s reflections on nature to Britten’s seascapes and Björk’s haunting Jóga. Performed by musicians from the European Space Agency’s climate team\, led by mezzo-soprano Susanne Mecklenburg with pianist William Hancox\, this concert offers a rare meeting of scientific insight and musical expression. Join us for an evening where the history of life resonates through sound as well as stone and stars. The musical pieces will be introduced with specimens that inspired their choice by two of the Museum’s geological research and collections staff; Dr. Ross Anderson and Dr. Duncan Murdock. The event includes a bar and a chance to explore the collections with a drink after dark. \n\nAbout the speaker\nSusanne Mecklenburg\nSusanne performs regularly as a soloist\, giving recitals in Italy\, Switzerland\, Germany and the UK. She came to singing later in life\, consequently her vocal training did not follow the conventional route. Even though she grew up in a musical family in Dresden and learnt classical Spanish guitar at an early age\, she decided to take up a scientific career. After graduating in natural sciences\, Susanne moved to Zurich where she obtained a PhD from the Swiss Institute for Technology. It was there that she returned to music\, receiving vocal training and singing in various music ensembles. In 2001 she moved to England to pursue her scientific career and met her pianist William Hancox at the Dartington International Summer School. From 2007 to 2019 Susanne lived outside Rome\, pursuing both her scientific and musical careers – the former as a Mission Manager for the European Space Agency’s Satellites. Since 2019 she has lived in the UK\, heading ESA’s Climate Office. \nWilliam Hancox \nAfter a degree at Cambridge\, William studied with Joseph Weingarten\, a student of Dohnanyi\, Bartok and Kodaly. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the UK and internationally\, broadcast for Classic FM and the BBC and made a number of recordings. He was a staff pianist at the Guildhall School\, Trinity College of Music and the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh. \nWilliam has performed throughout Europe and made several trips to China\, giving masterclasses and concerts in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. He has also worked extensively as a vocal coach\, with many students now pursuing successful singing careers. \nRecent projects include a recording of Nicholas Smith’s Love Friendship and Longing\, recitals with distinguished mezzo Louise Winter and a recording of English song with soprano Lorna Windsor. \nFor more information on the performers please visit \nwww.susannemecklenburg.info \nhttps://musicboxwealden.co.uk \nhttps://willhancox.co.uk \nWilliam lives in East Sussex and is deeply involved in music making in his own community. In 2022 he launched Music Box Wealden\, which promotes concerts featuring local artists in the Wealden area. \n\nAccessibility information\n\n\n\n\nWheelchair accessible?\nYes\n\n\nHearing loops?\nYes\n\n\nSeating?\nYes\n\n\nRefreshments?\nNo\n\n\nFlashing lights?\nNo\n\n\nLoud noises?\nNo

SUMMARY:Modernism Remodelled 2026
DESCRIPTION:Oxford University (and online). February 28-March 1\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\nModernism Remodelled\nA Transdisciplinary Conference \nOxford University (and online)\nFebruary 28-March 1\, 2026 \nFees: £180 (in person)\n£100 (Online)\nPrices exclude booking fees \nAbstract Deadline: January 18\, 2026 \n**Participants interested in attending the conference without presenting a paper are also welcome. \nCall for Presentations \nThis two-day conference seeks to bring together scholars\, creatives\, and arts-based researchers working on topics related to modernism and/or the contemporary cultural scenes that may have risen from the modernist period\, such as literary studies\, psychology\, musicology\, art studies\, architecture\, philosophy\, film studies\, media studies and beyond. \nIf we look at today’s cultural\, political\, and scientific scene\, we find that the pandemic\, social and political unrest\, technological and medical breakthroughs\, new trends in poetry\, a renewed interest in classicism and mythology (to name a few) resonate with an era not long ago. We detect a familiar pattern\, which can be seen as a recurrence of\, or maybe even an extension to the modernist period. Perhaps\, as designer Ellen Lupton put it\, “A second modernism has emerged\, reinvigorating the utopian search for universal forms that marked the birth of design as a discourse and a discipline nearly a century earlier.” \nThus\, we would like to explore the following questions: Can we say that we experiencing a sequel to\, or a “second wave” of modernism today? What happened to some of the movements and schools of thought that were born during the modernist period? How have some of them evolved? How have they contributed to the cultural scene today\, in both the sciences and the arts? \nWe aim to come together to explore—and perhaps investigate—the intersections between movements\, trends\, ideas\, sciences and aesthetic methodologies during the modernist period and today. \nWe welcome 15-minute presentations on comparative studies and research topics related to a full range of approaches to contemporary trends in (but not limited to) the following fields: \n• Modernist art movements (surrealism\, cubism\, impressionism\, futurism\, vorticism\, etc.)\n• Breaking away from conventions (in art\, science\, or everyday life)\n• Psychoanalysis and the creative unconscious\n• Philosophy and epistemology\n• Modernism in music and sound studies\n• Literature\, poetry\, and experimental writing\n• Film\, media\, and visual culture\n• Architecture and design\n• Spirituality\, mysticism\, and the search for meaning\n• Experimentation with language and form\n• Interwar periods and postwar transformations\n• The emergence of creative collectives and manifestos\n• Modernism’s afterlives and its impact on contemporary art and society\n• Digital modernisms and AI aesthetics\n• Eco-modernism\, posthumanism\, and sustainability \nPresenters can either share academic papers and/or creative work (poetry\, prose\, photography\, music\, painting\, etc.)\, as we highly encourage arts-based research. We welcome proposals from scholars\, creatives\, graduate students\, and professionals. \nSubmission Guidelines: Abstracts should be submitted through https://forms.gle/t99rW5eCZwphfu3W8 by January 18\, 2026. \nConference fee (for in person participation) includes: \nTea/coffee breaks on both days\, lunch on first day (besides the amazing intellectul\, creative\, and networking experiences and opportunities) \nContact Information: \nFor any inquiries or clarifications\, please email us on conferences@labrc.co.uk \n*By purchasing a ticket for this or any of the London Arts-Based Research Centre events\, you acknowledge and agree to the Terms and conditions and Privacy policy
