SUMMARY:Share this event Chunky Arm Knitting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fun for all the family and complete beginners \n\n\n\n\nCome and join us for a fun arm knitting workshop and take home your own mega chunky\, snuggly blanket! \nThis class is suitable for total beginners – no knitting or crafting experience is required. Adrienne from ‘Snuggle & Squish’ will be teaching you how to use your arms as knitting needles and you’ll create your whole blanket before the workshop has ended. \nYour finished blanket will measure approximately 150cm x 80cm. The exact size will vary depending on the tension of your yarn and the size of your stitches. This is what makes every blanket so unique. You will learn how to cast on\, create the stitches\, cast off and how to keep your blanket in tip top condition. \nYou’ll receive your own 2kg ball of vegan friendly “Mammoth” acrylic yarn from the masters of extreme knitting\, Woolly Mahoosive. There are lots of different colours to choose from which can be viewed on the workshop photos. Availability depends on demand when you come to the workshop. \nIt’s best to leave your jewellery and watches at home so they don’t get caught in your yarn and we recommend wearing short sleeves – don’t worry about getting cold\, you’ll be toasty and warm as the blanket grows on your lap. \nIncluded in your workshop: \n\nWorkshop will last approx 2 hrs\n2kg ball of mammoth yarn\nChunky knit blanket to take home on the day – Handmade by you.\nRefreshments and cake can be purchased onsite\n\nPlease follow GOOGLE MAPS to ‘BICESTER CANDLES’ for the best instructions to get to us.

SUMMARY:Pets & their People
DESCRIPTION:  11 March – 27 September 2026 \n ST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n Free admission\, no ticket required \nAbout the exhibition\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Hebrew and Jewish Book Culture in Medieval and Early Modern England
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThis talk will highlight two instances of the intellectual production of Jewish scholars and their close collaboration with Christian scholars in England in past centuries. \nThe first concerns the diverse cultural activities of the medieval Anglo-Jewish community before their expulsion in 1290\, including the production of dictionaries and commentaries\, some of which employed Anglo-Norman glosses written in Hebrew letters (i.e.\, Judeo-French). \nThe second focuses on the collaboration between Jewish and Christian scribes in the creation of bilingual Bibles as part of early Christian Hebraism. It will also consider the wide range of interest and curiosity among English scholars regarding Jewish learning in pre-expulsion England and\, later\, from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Following the return of the Jews to England\, this interest included active collaboration with the Jewish community—both rabbis and lay leaders—who participated in major intellectual projects led by scholars such as John Selden\, Edward Pococke\, and Benjamin Kennicott. \nThis event is part of Jewish Culture Month and in collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. \n\n\nSpeakers\nProfessor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger\, Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and Corpus Christi College\, University of Oxford \nDr César Merchán-Hamann\, Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and Bodleian Libraries \nEvent information\n\nThis event takes place in person in the Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre at the Weston Library.\nThe Weston Library is wheelchair accessible. Find out more about accessibility at our site.\nPlease note: only bottled water is permitted in the lecture theatre. No food or other drinks are allowed.

Book below \n\nWith David Boyd Haycock\, art historian\, author and curator \nRoger Fry (1866-1934) was a British painter and art critic\, and a member of the Bloomsbury Group\, an influential collective of 20th-century British writers\, artists and intellectuals. \nIn this talk David will introduce his new book ‘Art Quake 1910: The Manet and the Post-Impressionists Exhibition’ which casts a spotlight on Fry’s life and his role in creating Modern British Art. \nIn 1910\, Fry curated the ground-breaking exhibition ‘Manet and the Post-Impressionists’ in London. Featuring work by Gauguin\, Picasso\, Matisse\, Cézanne and Van Gogh\, this ‘artquake’ transformed perceptions of art in Britain forever. \nIntent on making the British public more attentive to beauty and good design\, Fry founded the Omega Workshop in 1912\, employing young artists to produce highly original household goods for the middle and upper classes. \nYet he was a divisive figure – ‘a shark in aesthetic waters\,’ as one contemporary called him. \nJoin us for this talk to find out more… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nFanny Claus\, Edward Manet\, 1868\, oil on canvas\, on display in Gallery 65 \n\n\n\n\n\n \nSir Charles Holroyd\, Roger Fry\, 1899\, etched copper plate \n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDr. David Boyd Haycock is a Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford Brookes University. SUMMARY:Scale Up Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\nOne-day conference focused on translating laboratory-scale discoveries into industrial-scale processes. \n\n\n\n\nScaling up represents a crucial\, yet often neglected\, aspect of scientific innovation. Many researchers discover the limitations of “It worked in the lab” only years after leaving academia. Embedding scale-up considerations into early-stage research can greatly enhance the societal (sustainability\, world health\, etc.) and industrial impact of academic discoveries. \nThe in-person Scale Up Conference 2026 at the University of Oxford will explore the scientific and technical challenges of translating laboratory-scale discoveries in chemistry\, biology\, materials science\, and pharmaceuticals\, in to viable industrial-scale processes. \nJoin us to hear about “AI for Scale-up Challenges” from our keynote speaker Antonio Del Rio Chanona (Imperial College London) as well as a fireside chat on “How to scale-up the manufacturing of the University of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine” with Sandy Douglas\, (University of Oxford). This will complement two parallel speaker tracks throughout the day on scale-up challenges in Biology and Chemistry. More speaker details can be found below. \nThe conference will be followed by a Laboratory Automation Showcase and networking reception in the evening. \nTickets include lunch\, tea breaks and a wine reception. The event is part of the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub Programme at Jesus College Oxford. \nSpeakers (more to be announced soon): \n\nAI for Scale-Up with Antonio del Rio Chanona (Imperial College London) Developing high-performing bioprocesses is costly and complex\, requiring iterative\, multi-scale experimentation from microtiter plates to pilot reactors. We propose a multi-fidelity batch Bayesian optimization framework to accelerate bioprocess development and reduce experimental costs. Multiple case studies show how the proposed workflow can achieve a reduction in experimental costs and increased yield.\nFireside Chat with Sandy Douglas (University of Oxford) Sandy led the manufacturing scale-up of the University of Oxford COVID-19 vaccine up to the point of transfer to AstraZeneca. This included the development of the novel low-cost large-scale manufacturing process\, and initiating the formation of the UK & international ‘distributed manufacturing site’ consortium which has produced over a billion doses. Following this fireside chat\, Sandy will be joined by other speakers for a panel discussing process scale-up across both biology and chemistry. Moderated by Jonathan Cook (Jenner Institute Oxford)\nEmma Brass (University of Liverpool) Process chemistry creates scalable routes for new lead molecules and is a crucial but laborious stage in pharmaceutical and agrochemical development cycles. We have built an automated process chemistry platform that tackles late-stage process development. Timings for round-the-clock\, back-to-back experiments suggest that the weekly reaction output of the robot operating multiple reactors could exceed that of a human process chemist by a factor of 12 in an industrial setting. In this talk\, I will discuss our work building this platform and the challenges that we faced.\nMatthew Bone (Principal Computational Scientist\, SOLVE Chemistry) Computational chemistry for automated virtual pre-screening of various tasks like solubility at SOLVE Chemistry.\nDania Awad (Werner-Siemens Chair of Synthetic Biology\, TU Munich) The SUSPENSE project develops bio-based wood adhesives from wheat bran milling waste\, a readily available\, non-food biomass. SUSPENSE links biorefinery processing with circular material design\, with process validation progressing from laboratory scale (100 mL) to demonstrator scale (50–200 L)\, the project provides a clear pathway toward sustainable\, industrially viable adhesive systems.\nLaura Helleckes (Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow\, Imperial College London) Self-driving labs for scale-up with data-driven optimisation: Bioprocess experimentation is disconnected across scales – from microtitre plates to pilot reactors – making high-performing process development costly and complex. Conventional Design of Experiments (DoE) methods often struggle to address scale-up. Laura’s talk will highlight data-driven solutions\, including multi-fidelity batch Bayesian optimisation.\nSuzanne Robb (CPI) Scaling a bioprocess is often framed as a problem of volume\, but in reality it is a problem of understanding. As processes move from lab to pilot to production\, hidden constraints emerge; biological\, operational\, financial\, and regulatory\, that cannot be solved by bigger vessels alone. This talk explores scale‑up as a systems challenge: one that demands deep process insight\, access to the right scale‑up infrastructure and investment\, and smarter approaches to managing risk. Drawing on real‑world examples and over 16 years of industry experience\, it will examine how these challenges are being addressed in practice\, and how advances in data integration\, AI‑enabled modelling\, and digital experimentation can be used to accelerate scale‑up decisions. By reducing timelines and costs while increasing confidence at every stage\, this approach enables a more resilient\, capital‑efficient path to manufacturing at scale\, one in which technology and biology evolve together.\nJoe Taylor (Head of Innovation\, Hoxton Farms) Scaling a bioprocess from R&D to manufacturing is a persistent challenge with high costs\, long timelines and technical risk. We experienced this first-hand at Hoxton Farms\, scaling mammalian cell culture from flasks to 500L. Solving this guided our development of Lattice\, our modular\, AI-native bioreactor platform. This talk will explore how AI-driven process development\, automation and a scalable hardware platform can streamline bioprocess scale-up to cut costs and timelines and deliver biomanufacturing at scale.\nJasper Schuurmans (University of Amsterdam) Jasper is a chemical engineer perusing his PhD in the Noël Research Group in Amsterdam. He will discuss scaling up synthetic organic photochemistry\, with a focus on multiphasic systems. While new photochemical methods are typically developed at milligram scale\, intensification and process design can enable production at gram and kilogram scale. Jasper will also emphasise the additional challenges associated with photochemical scale-up compared to conventional thermal chemistry.\nHessam Mehr (Lecturer in AI for Science and Chemistry\, King’s College London) Does scaling up discovery simply mean going from one to an army of robots searching for a hit? In this talk\, I will showcase ongoing work in my research group to scale up the discovery of new molecules\, reactions and materials\, by re-imagining the search process without the constraints of manual laboratory chemistry.\n\nFIND US \nThis event will take place in the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub at Jesus College\, Oxford. The Hub entrance is on Market Street (opposite Wagamama). The Hub is accessible\, with automatic double doors at the entrance and lifts to and from the main lower ground floor event space. \nIf you have any accessibility requirements\, please do contact digitalhub@jesus.ox.ac.uk and we are happy to help. \n*Filming and photography will be taking place during the event. If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed\, please notify a member of the Hub team on arrival.
