SUMMARY:Contextualizing the Modern Era of Vaccination
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n“Immunity and Humanities” Lecture: Elena Conis (Berkeley) \n\n\n\n\nWhy Not Vaccinate? Some Historical Answers \nLaunch of the “Immunity and the Humanities” Program \nHesitancy toward vaccination has been a constant since the practice’s inception at the end of the eighteenth century\, yet the mid-twentieth century introduced a complex paradox: the simultaneous rise of vaccine skepticism and the mass acceptance of compulsory childhood immunization. This presentation examines how historical trends in religious\, political\, and secular objections to vaccination have persisted and mutated over the last 200 years. It will describe the impact of modern social drivers—including shifting gender roles\, environmental concerns\, economic imperatives\, and the valuation of children—on vaccination discourse from the latter-twentieth century to today. This historical contextualization will offer insight into how today’s vaccination resistance and rejection both mirror and depart from the past. \n____ \nEventbrite processes data (including any personal data you may submit by responding to this invitation) outside of the European Economic Area. SUMMARY:Share this event Sarah Wynn-Williams CARELESS PEOPLE with Stephanie Merritt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Sarah Wynn-Williams at Blackwell’s Oxford in conversation with Stephanie Merritt. \n\n\n\n\nCareless People\nSarah Wynn-Williams’s Careless People was one of the non-fiction sensations of 2025. A hugely praised – and award winning – bestselling account of Sarah’s time as Global Policy Director at Facebook\, Meta secured a ruling against Sarah on publication day preventing her from promoting the book\, or indeed saying anything critical or ‘otherwise detrimental’ about Meta. \nDue to these ongoing legal restrictions\, Sarah is barred from speaking about her book or from saying anything negative about her former employer. Instead\, Sarah will join us to share her thoughts and invite engagement on a wider\, more urgent conversation: how did we lose control of the Internet\, and is it possible to reclaim it? From the decay of the online world to the new geopolitics of AI\, as power shifts from governments to platforms\, this is a rare chance to hear from a woman who has stood at the nexus of global diplomacy and big-tech power—and lived to share the tale at great personal cost. \nSarah Wynn-Williams \nSarah Wynn-Williams is a former New Zealand diplomat and international lawyer. She joined Facebook after pitching a job and worked there for many years\, ultimately becoming director of global public policy. After leaving the company\, she has continued to work on tech policy\, including artificial intelligence. \nStephanie Merritt \nStephanie Merritt began reviewing books for national newspapers while she was reading English literature at Queens’ College\, Cambridge and after graduating went on to become Deputy Literary Editor of the Observer in 1998. Her first novel\, Gaveston\, was published by Faber & Faber in 2002 and won a Betty Trask award. \nShe continues to work as a feature writer and critic for the Guardian and the Observer and from 2007-2008 she curated and produced the Talks and Debates programme on issues in contemporary arts and politics at London’s Soho Theatre. She has appeared as a panellist on various Radio 4 shows and on BBC2’s Newsnight Review\, and is a regular chair and presenter at the Hay Festival and the National Theatre.

SUMMARY:Box Tale Soup 1984
DESCRIPTION:Award winning Box Tale Soup present a stunning new adaptation of Orwell’s dystopian classic\, 1984. Known for their ingenious sets and slick storytelling\, Box Tale Soup’s unique puppetry becomes a striking metaphor for Orwell’s chilling vision of power and control. \nThe year is 1984\, perhaps – it is impossible to tell for certain. We are being watched\, Big Brother is everywhere\, truth changes daily\, and everyone conforms. But for Winston Smith\, insignificant cog in the Party’s vast machine\, this half-life is not enough. He dreams of freedom\, but is he the only one? Dreams can be deadly when rebellion begins with a thought. \nFeaturing the voices of Sophie Aldred & Joanna Lumley\, with Simon Russell Beale as the voice of Big Brother. \nAge guidance: 12+ \n\n\n\n\nReviews\n\n“A vital watch.” \n    The List\n\n“This thought-provoking\, striking production is as relevant today as when it was first written.” \n     British Theatre Guide

Harris \nAlf and Rube have questions. Would you notice if you were underwater? What would it be like to be rich? Why has everyone started wearing black? \nDeaths and Entrances is an exciting piece of new writing by graduate creative writing student Nathan A. Harris. The play is a vibrant\, Beckettian exploration of friendship\, personal responsibility\, and ignorance. \nIt follows Alf and Rube – two peculiarly codependent vagrants – as they bicker\, ruminate on their shared past\, rob strangers\, get arrested\, and wonder what it would be like to be a fish.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk
