SUMMARY:Lunchtime Talk: 'Over the Hills to Glory: The story of the Ascott Martyrs'
DESCRIPTION:Discover an important moment in the history of protest and trade unionism in Oxfordshire\, with a group of determined women at its heart. \n\n\n\n‘Over the Hills to Glory: The story of the Ascott Martyrs’ \nIn 1873\, 16 women from the Oxfordshire village of Ascott-under-Wychwood – two with their babies – were imprisoned for supporting agricultural labourers who were striking in an attempt to force their employers to improve their meagre wages. They were each sentenced to seven to ten days of imprisonment with hard labour. \nThe resulting public outcry demonstrates the support and solidarity of the local community for the women’s determined\, courageous actions\, and their significance at the national level. \nThe Ascott Martyrs’ story sheds light on the conditions of agricultural labourers and their families\, who at that time made up the bulk of the rural population\, and the early history of agricultural trade unionism in Oxfordshire. The extensive press coverage of the events of 1873 also reveals much about the everyday lives of these women\, whose actions challenge the popular idea of passive\, submissive\, apolitical\, Victorian womanhood in radical ways. \nTickets cost £6 and are available online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or at the Museum shop. Tickets for this event also include access to our Galleries. \nComplimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. \nSales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities\, community engagement projects\, schools workshops\, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. \nCarol Anderson was for many years the Director of The Oxfordshire Museum at Woodstock\, and Manager of the County’s Museum Service. Her interest in the archaeology and history of Oxfordshire is wide ranging. Since retirement\, her research interests have focused on aspects of the history of the Wychwoods\, and in particular on an incident that took place a little over 150 years ago in the village of Ascott-under-Wychwood where she lives. She lectures frequently on the Ascott Martyrs and other topics related to local history. Carol is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, Chair of the Ascott Martyrs Educational Trust\, and volunteers for the Wychwoods Local History Society Archive and the Burford Tolsey Museum and Archive. She is also a Trustee of the Oxfordshire Buildings Trust and a committee member of the Oxfordshire Local History Association. When a busy retirement allows\, she is also an enthusiastic\, but very inexperienced\, family historian. \nScaffolding at Oxford Town Hall: \nFrom August 2025\, scaffolding will be in place outside Oxford Town Hall. Both entrances to the Town Hall (main steps and level access entrance) will remain fully open and accessible while these essential maintenance works are carried out. More information can be found on our Plan Your Visit page. \nAccess: \nThere is step-free\, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum\, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. \nAccessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor\, before entering the Museum. Please contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. Further access information can be found on our page dedicated to access at the museum. \nPhoto consent: \nPlease be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed\, please let a member of staff know during the event. \n£7.21

SUMMARY:FREE Women's Circle
DESCRIPTION:A warm welcome. Our circle is a sacred and safe space for women to share their wisdom\, share their stories\, and feel seen\, heard and held.\n\n\n\nA heartfelt welcome to the Your True Path to Wellness CIC Women’s Circle. This little sanctuary is where our community first came to life back in February 2021. 😊 \nAt the time\, I was craving a deeper connection—somewhere women could feel truly held\, heard\, and seen without judgment. I longed for a cosy\, nurturing space where we could share our stories\, support one another\, and simply be. A place that felt like home. \nWhen I couldn’t find it anywhere… I decided to create it myself.\nAnd I’m so grateful you’re here to be part of it. x \nWhat is a Women’s Circle? \nA women’s circle is a sacred\, supportive space where we can pause\, check in with ourselves\, and feel truly held. Modern life can leave us stressed\, busy\, and disconnected\, often leading to burnout. A circle gives you permission to step away from the to-do list\, breathe\, and ask yourself how you’re really doing. It’s a simple\, nurturing way to replenish your energy and reconnect with what matters. \nThese gatherings are open to women of all ages and backgrounds. If you identify as a woman—including trans women—you are warmly and wholeheartedly welcome here. What brings us together is the shared experience of womanhood. In the circle\, we listen with open hearts—without judgment\, without needing to fix anything—simply creating space to be seen\, heard\, and supported. \nMany of us have lost touch with our intuition and inner wisdom. In this space\, we’re gently guided back to ourselves. Women’s circles encourage self-love\, empowerment\, and growth\, all within a warm and inclusive community. \nWhile each circle is unique\, they all share a common thread: offering a safe place to connect\, reflect\, and refill your cup. \nIf you’re looking for support\, connection\, or simply a moment to breathe\, I wholeheartedly recommend joining a women’s circle with an open mind and heart. \nA gentle note before we begin—please read this before joining the circle: \nPlease arrive a few minutes before 7:00 pm so we can begin together and keep the space settled. We honour this stillness and cannot welcome new arrivals after 7: 10pm. \nWe ask that cameras be on for the welcome so we can feel connected\, and you’re free to switch yours off afterwards if you prefer. \nIn the circle\, you’re welcome to share\, listen\, or simply be—you’re enough just as you are. And finally\, everything shared here is held in confidence; our trust and care for one another stay within the circle. \nIf you’re feeling unsure\, have questions\, or want to reach out before we meet\, please email me at: YourTruePathtoWellness@gmail.com \nGet cosy\, make yourself a warm drink\, and join us.\nWe honestly can’t wait to gather with you and share this heartfelt space. \nWith love and a warm hug\,\nDanielle (Dee) x \nFrom £0.00

SUMMARY:Pets & their People
DESCRIPTION:  11 March – 27 September 2026 \n ST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n Free admission\, no ticket required \nAbout the exhibition\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk
