DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Venue\, Timing and Cost\n\nVenue:\n\nThe Turrill Sculpture Garden\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nSaturday\, 7 March 2026 to Saturday\, 25 April 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\nMon\, Fri – 9.30 – 5.00pm Tues\, Thurs 9.30 – 6.30pm Sat 9.30 – 4.00pm Closed Wed\, Sun\n\n\n\nCost:\n\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA striking new exhibition in the Turrill Sculpture Garden\, showcasing large scale sculptural works by Creative Futures (Level 1) and Foundation Art & Design students from Abingdon & Witney College.\nBringing together oversized insect sculptures and hand built ceramic watchtowers\, the exhibition explores themes of surveillance\, scale\, and the uneasy relationship between humans\, creatures\, and the structures we build.\nLevel 1 students took inspiration from bugs and specimens at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History\, enlarging tiny organisms into bold\, three foot long forms using wire\, modroc\, plaster\, and paint. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. Part of the massive security operation entailed\, Roman officer Marcus is detailed to keep an eye on one man in particular\, a Jesus of Nazareth\, to note any “subversive elements” in his behaviour and report back if there are any “particular issues.” \nDismissive of a movement so misguided and naive\, but increasingly baffled by the unpredictability of its leader\, Marcus finds himself caught up in events that defy any logical reporting. Similarly embroiled are a woman who owes this man everything and the young fisherman who loves him – just not quite enough to stand by him. \nDealing with themes of love\, betrayal\, grief\, life and death – though not necessarily in that order – The Passion by Chris Matthewman and Sam Pullen-Campbell is “urgent\, raw\, compelling … and astonishingly real” (Audience member).

But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE CULTURE CARE\n\n\n\n\nFREE EXHIBITION –  opens 28 Mar 2026\nGallery 8 \n\nThis is the fifth in the Ashmolean NOW exhibition series\, where contemporary artists are invited to create new work inspired by the Ashmolean’s historical collections. \n\nThis exhibition showcases the work of Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat\, who draws inspiration from the Sundarbans\, the largest mangrove forest in the world\, and the Ashmolean collections to address the climate crisis. \nHer art reflects on environmental issues and the interconnectedness of nature and humanity\, especially in Bangladesh\, where the Sundarbans\, faces threats from climate change. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. For full licence holders. \n\n\n\n\nAbout this event \nBe a Better Biker (BaBB) is designed to give motorcyclists (full licence holders) an introduction to advanced riding. The day covers the principles of advanced riding including: \n• Manoeuvring \n• Overtaking \n• Cornering techniques \n• On-road assessment with observers\, approximately 2 hours \n• A review of the on-road sessions\, discussing lessons learnt \nThere are 8 places available; Workshops will start at 10.00am prompt. SUMMARY:Camera Club: Glow
DESCRIPTION:Camera Club is part of The North Wall’s YouthLab programme\, which supports young people aged 12-17 in developing their creative skills alongside professional artists. Every year a group of 6-8 aspiring photographers works with artist Elina Medley to create images using digital SLR cameras and then to curate an exhibition of photography. \nLast summer they worked in the studio as well as the streets and parks of Oxford to experiment with different subject matter and approaches to image-making. Over four days they built on their technical and creative skills and discovered the subjects they love to photograph. \nDuring the October half term\, they immersed themselves in several exhibitions of photography and learnt so much about how to curate their own exhibition. Students encounter a wide range of choral literature\, including classical masterworks\, contemporary compositions\, jazz\, world music\, and emerging voices in the choral canon. Awesome comic artist\, Neill Cameron will be on hand to offer helpful advice and tips. \n\nA comic club for slightly older artists\, storytellers and comic enthusiasts (age 11+) to develop their comic making skills with professional comic book artist\, Neill Cameron\, on hand to offer helpful advice and tips. \nThe unaccompanied session is 90 minutes long. \nAt The Story Museum we believe that finances should not impact a young person’s ability to access the arts. Therefore\, we offer bursaries for the course price and related travel expenses for low-income families. To apply for a bursary place\, please email us.\n \n\nDue to unforeseen circumstances the session of Comic Club Plus taking place on Saturday 28 February has been cancelled.\n\n \nAbout Neill \nNeill Cameron is a cartoonist and writer\, creator of the young adult graphic novels Mo-Bot High and the instructional How To Make Awesome Comics. Since 2011 his work has appeared in the weekly children’s comic The Phoenix\, where he produces – amongst other things – the dinosaur adventure serial The Pirates of Pangaea (with co-writer Daniel Hartwell)\, the robotic soap opera comedy Mega Robo Bros\, and (with artist Kate Brown) the Cornish-set fantasy drama Tamsin and the Deep. \nNeill frequently travels the country giving workshops in schools\, libraries and at festivals\, and is a passionate advocate for the role comics can play in fostering literacy and encouraging children’s creativity.
