SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Alex Steele & Catherine Sykes Quartet: The Burt Bacharach Jazz Experience
DESCRIPTION:New jazz interpretations of the music of Burt Bacharach featuring Catherine Sykes (vocals)\, Alex Steele (musical director\, piano)\, Paul Jeff \n\n\n\n\nFrom the 1950’s onwards\, Burt Bacharach created a huge catalogue of compositions\, featuring a very unique style of chords\, harmonies and changing time signatures. It is this creativity in his compositions which has led his music to be greatly explored and appreciated by jazz musicians. Alex Steele leads this new band\, with a set of special arrangements of these classic songs\, pushing the music more deeply into modern jazz territory. You’ll know the songs\, but you won’t have heard them played like this before! \nLeading the quartet\, Alex Steele is a unique voice in jazz\, well-known for his passion\, energy and a deep sense of musicality as a jazz pianist. He has been inspired by his heroes\, Chick Corea\, Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau\, and through his own musical journey\, he has found his own unique voice. Alex brings his own special sense of energy to audiences\, exploring the beauty of improvisation\, zest\, passion and creativity in music. \nVocalist Catherine Sykes expresses one of her most significant musical influences as Ella Fitzgerald. Catherine says “I love the freedom and space of jazz music. There are no set rules\, no boundaries\, no definitive way to sing. Rhythm and melody can be played with\, feelings explored\, day-to-day worries lost in the wonderful world of the music. I love what I do” \n£12 – £22

SUMMARY:Audubon’s Vagrants Printer-in-Residence workshops with James Freemantle
DESCRIPTION:About the workshops\nJames Freemantle\, the Bodleian Printer in Residence 2025–26\, will lead workshops creating a birdwatcher’s notebook based on John J. Audubon’s Birds of America. \nEach workshop in this series enables participants to see and contribute to the stages of production of a book by hand: typesetting\, illustration\, and binding. With help from workshop participants\, James Freemantle will produce an observational notebook to record sightings of birds\, incorporating details from John J. Audubon’s Birds of America. The book will record so-called ‘vagrant birds\,’ those sighted outside their normal range. \nWe will be running four workshops. Each will be different\, and you are invited to sign up for one or several. The activities in each workshop will depend upon the progress of the project\, and will include setting type\, printing\, and sewing the book. \nWorkshop dates\n\n\n\n\nMonday 19 January 2026\, 11.00 – 13.00\n\n\nMonday 19 January 2026\, 14.00 – 16.00\n\n\nSunday 1 March 2026\, 11.00 – 13.00\n\n\nSunday 1 March 2026\, 14.00 – 16.00\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\nJames Freemantle is proprietor of the St James Park Press\, established in 2014.
