DESCRIPTION:A day of qigong practice\, guided meditation and dharma reflections with Mimi Kuo Deemer \n\n\n\n\nSaturday 4th July 2026\, 10.00am – 5.00pm UK time\, in person and online \nWe are very happy to welcome Mimi Kuo-Deemer to lead this day of qigong and meditation for Oxford Insight Meditation. \nWhen qigong’s powerful\, spiraling dragon forms meet the transformative potential of mindfulness\, magic can happen. Join Mimi for a daylong retreat exploring these two forces as one direct\, embodied experience. \nThrough gentle yet deeply strengthening practices\, Mimi will share her love of qigong dragons forms. She will also share insights through dharma talks and guided meditation. Most importantly\, it will be fun! Get ready to swim through the seas and soar through the skies breathing clouds (did you know that Chinese dragons don’t breathe fire\, they breathe clouds?). \nTogether\, we will hone the qualities bestowed by dragons: confidence and kindness\, resilience and resourcefulness\, protection from harmful thoughts and emotions\, and the ability to transform difficulties into wisdom and insight. \nAll levels of experience\, shapes\, colors\, identities and interests are welcome and encouraged to join. Come play\, explore and awaken your mindful dragon-like possibilities! \nThe day will include periods of qigong\, guided meditation and dharma teachings. The day will be primarily in silence. We ask that you commit to staying for the full day. \nMimi Kuo-Deemer\, MA\, is an author and teacher of meditation\, qigong\, and internal martial arts (6th generation lineage holder in Baguazhang). She has received authorisation to teach Insight Meditation from Martin Aylward\, with whom she has co-led retreats. Her teachings draw inspiration from nature\, the Dao\, and the wisdom of Buddha Dharma. She lives in the Oxfordshire countryside with her husband\, their dog\, three cats\, 8 chickens and 60\,000 bees. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. The story tells the tale of Lindoro\, Prince of Sorrento\, who is in search of the lost Princess of Benevento; he wishes to marry her and retore her to her rightful throne. She was last seen at the fishing village of Taranto\, where two fisher girls – Nerina and Lesbina – live. When the Prince arrives\, they both pretend that they are the Princess\, in order to catch the his eye. To do so\, they ditch their current lovers\, the fishermen Fresollino and Burlotto; the men in turn seek revenge by trying to pass off each other’s girlfriends as the Princess. However\, by means of a dramatic identification of a jeweled dagger\, it emerges that Eurilda is the Princess; she has been in Mastricco’s care all the time. \nLe Pescatrici was\, like Haydn’s other operas\, premiered in the theatre at Eszterháza\, the residence of the composer patron; the first performance was on 16 September 1770 to mark the wedding celebrations of Countess Lamberg\, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy’s niece\, and Count Poggi. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. DESCRIPTION:Amanda Golden\, Editor of this new edition of Sylvia Plath’s poems will discuss the book with Poet Erica McAlpine. \n\n\n\n\nThe Poems of Sylvia Plath \nSylvia Plath’s first Collected Poems was published in 1981. This new volume draws on decades of research and almost doubles the content of that previous edition. \nThe book is in two parts. It begins with the poems Plath composed in the last ten years of her life and on which her reputation is founded\, and follows with those poems written in childhood and through her student years. In both sections the editors date\, correct and arrange each poem chronologically\, drawing on manuscripts\, typescripts and related material. Critical notes help document Plath’s extraordinary evolution as a poet\, from her childhood compositions through to the blossoming of early ambition and into the molten core that was to shape the poems of her last few years and secure her place in literary history. \nAmanda Golden \nAmanda Golden is an Associate Professor of English at New York Institute of Technology. Previously\, She held a Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, the NEH Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics at Emory University’s Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry\, and taught at Agnes Scott College. She received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington and her B.A. in English from Colgate University. Her research and teaching interests include twentieth century literature\, modernism\, poetry and poetics\, literary archives\, composition\, and the digital humanities. \nErica McAlpine \nErica McAlpine is Associate Professor of English at Oxford and the A. C. Cooper Fellow in English at St Edmund Hall.

But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures.
