SUMMARY:If Music Be the Food of Love …
DESCRIPTION:If Music Be the Food of Love …\n\nWhen: 22 Feb 2026 at 6.30 pm \nWhere: Holywell Music Room – Holywell St\, Oxford OX1 3SB \nTicket Price – £18\, £8 students / under 25 \n\n  \n  \n\nOxford Pro Musica Singers\nMark Jordan (conductor)\nIf music be the food of love …\nA feast of choral music celebrating food and drink \nThe intimate auditorium of the Holywell Music Room is the venue for a banquet of music on the theme of food and drink\, cordially hosted and performed by Oxford Pro Musica Singers. \nVariety being the spice of a concert programme\, ours will range from reverent celebrations of the eucharistic feast\, with contrasting settings of O Sacrum Convivium by Tallis\, Messiaen and Jackson as well as some majestic Lassus\, Palestrina and Poulenc\, to some rather cheekier numbers such as a rambunctious drinking song by Mendelssohn and the perky but tender Tea for Two. The centrepiece of the programme will be Bob Chilcott’s rarely heard song cycle Fragments from his Dish\, six settings of an eclectic mix of texts beginning with a grace by Robert Herrick\, going on to devour excerpts of Piers Plowman\, Pepys’s diary and an eighteenth-century newspaper account of a record pie and ending with a bang inspired by G.K. Chesterton at his most rollicking. \nWe hope our musical feast will have a course to suit everyone\, and that this evening of conviviality Oxford-Pro-Musica-style will cheer your February and leave you feeling fully satisfied.

SUMMARY:Song of Myself (Display)
DESCRIPTION:Song of Myself\, 1995\, Tom Phillips RA (1937–2022)\, wire\, 360 x 180 cm.\nCredit: Estate of Tom Phillips CBE RA \nTom Phillips described Song of Myself as “an attempt to list the various identities that go to make a single artistic life”. The work borrows its title from a poem in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Its beginning is based on the confessional Anglo-Saxon poem\, The Seafarer\, which Phillips first came across as an undergraduate at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford. \nWithin the work\, the alert reader will find further references\, direct or cryptic\, to Homer\, Plato\, Dante\, Cervantes\, Shakespeare\, Marvell\, Conrad\, R. L. Stevenson; to the music of Wagner and Robert Schumann; and to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. The text is littered with echoes of Phillips’s own artistic preoccupations: as a painter\, calligrapher\, user of stencils and maker of books. \nPhillips first made a pencil drawing of the text\, then worked with the fabricator Leo Verryt to realise the work in wire\, as a hanging poem. Other versions of the text exist\, one in a series of paintings called Curriculum Vitae (No XX\, 1992)\, and another in Self Portrait in Silver (2004). Phillips writes: “The unity of the piece in which letters are tortured into cooperation hopes to reflect an overall homogeneity in the spirit of its maker”. \nThe Bodleian Libraries also has the Tom Phillips archive in our collection.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Lubomyr Melnyk live in Oxford - First Return Series
DESCRIPTION:Lubomyr Melnyk – live in Oxford – First Return Series\n  \nWhere: The New Space (in Gradel Quad\, New College)\, Oxford\, OX13TE \nWhen: Monday 23rd February 2026 – Tuesday 24th February 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Balliol College Music Society (BCMS) brings you another recital from the world-class Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk\, in the New Space of New College\, as he returns to Oxford for an highly anticipated return series. Filling the Barbican in 2023\, and packing venues in the Colleges Balliol\, Magdalen and Wadham in November 2025\, Lubomyr looks forward to sharing continuous music with you all\, dear friends\, this February 2026 – a November Oxford and Cambridge follow-up series is also on the cards. \nLast November\, the BCMS saw\, for the first time\, academics in tears\, and we were moved by the fantastically warm reception and to see just how touched many of our attendees were by Lubomyr’s music. We are extremely excited to announce that this return will be complemented by the activities of the professional film-maker Rupert Clague\, who has been making a documentary about Lubomyr over the last 5 years – executive producer\, Werner Herzog! – and by the research interests of Oliver Durcan\, a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths\, University of London and founder of Creative Empirical. The BCMS will be working with Durcan and others going forward to better understand the wealth of anecdotal claims made about Lubomyr’s neurophysical technique and the extraordinary experiences of a certain percentage of audience members. \nOne of the most remarkable pianists of our time\, Lubomyr creates music which is immersive and transporting. As he channels phenomenal energies and speeds in unbroken yet dynamic pieces\, the typical audience is thunderstruck by his stamina and is swept up in the glistening polyphony\, perhaps not realising that\, for him\, the playing is joyful and as easy as breathing: there is no real question of ‘stamina’. Often described as transcendental\, Lubomyr prefers to think of (the more recent incarnations of) his music instead as the: “operatic voice for the piano\,” as his great calmness allows him to maintain a multitude of songs over and under the flow of the piece\, a calm which extends to an incredible feeling of freedom: the open-minded listener is able to join him in the eye of the storm. That calmness is even found notable when his students give amateur performances. \nWhat was initially an attempt to bring the burgeoning minimalist\, ambient sound and the Indian classical virtuosity to the Western classical tradition soon became an entirely new genre and world of sound\, when Lubomyr left the Canadian conservatoires in the early ’70s to work in Paris. Lubomyr’s pioneering “continuous music” is both a new physical and mental technique\, orthogonal to those of the classical traditions\, and a philosophy of piano music and performance. His incredible creates a sound which is tangible\, often sounding like three or four pianos at once\, or not like a piano at all. His range of touches – from the impossible liquidity to the raw hurricane in “Windmills”\, his greatest piece – is made possible only by his mental state\, and he attributes the spiritual force of his playing to his Ukrainian heritage. \nThe organiser\, Nathan Adlam\, and Lubomyr extend their thanks to the Warden\, Fellows and Porters of New College for the venue; to all at Balliol College for their continuing support of both Lubomyr and the musical society; to Dr Emilie Capulet\, Dr Juan Gonzalez\, Dr Alexander Binns\, Dr Sung Hee Kim\, Dr Anna Zerio\, the Revd Dr Laura Biron-Scott\, Professor Kate Crosby\, Professor Thomas Melham\, Louisa Denby\, Dasha Nepochatova\, Sylvia Temple\, Alexander Russell\, Oliver Durcan\, Rupert Clague\, Sean Qualter\, Peter Tsakov and countless others for their particular interest and support of this series; and to the Oxford University Ukrainian Society for their endless spirit and the undeniable community buzz they bring to our events. We also thank any and all who attended our last concert series with Lubomyr\, and those who joined in the ‘fireside chats’\, making last November so special and leaving Lubomyr feeling very welcome in Oxford.

SUMMARY:Sir Howard Colvin Lecture 2026: Anthony Geraghty
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nSt John’s College welcomes Professor Anthony Geraghty (University of York) for the inaugural Sir Howard Colvin Lecture. \n\n\n\n\n‘Wren\, Vanbrugh\, and Hawksmoor: the minds that made the English Baroque’\nThis lecture will revisit one of the great moments in British architectural history – the emergence of the English baroque style in the years around 1700. It will look afresh at the principal architects involved – Christopher Wren\, Nicholas Hawksmoor\, and John Vanbrugh – and it will offer new interpretations of their haunting\, compelling designs. More specifically\, the lecture will show how each of these architects grounded their work in a distinctive set of philosophical first principles\, and how it was the coming together of these discrete artistic personalities that brought the English baroque into being. The lecture will thereby revisit two of the main research areas associated with Sir Howard Colvin: the centrality of the Office of Works in the history of British architecture\, and the place of biographical analysis within the discipline of architectural history. \n\nLocation\n\n\n\nGarden Quad Auditorium\, St John’s College\n\nSt Giles’ \nOxford OX1 3JP
