SUMMARY:Audubon’s Vagrants Printer-in-Residence workshops with James Freemantle
DESCRIPTION:About the workshops\nJames Freemantle\, the Bodleian Printer in Residence 2025–26\, will lead workshops creating a birdwatcher’s notebook based on John J. Audubon’s Birds of America. \nEach workshop in this series enables participants to see and contribute to the stages of production of a book by hand: typesetting\, illustration\, and binding. With help from workshop participants\, James Freemantle will produce an observational notebook to record sightings of birds\, incorporating details from John J. Audubon’s Birds of America. The book will record so-called ‘vagrant birds\,’ those sighted outside their normal range. \nWe will be running four workshops. Each will be different\, and you are invited to sign up for one or several. The activities in each workshop will depend upon the progress of the project\, and will include setting type\, printing\, and sewing the book. \nWorkshop dates\n\n\n\n\nMonday 19 January 2026\, 11.00 – 13.00\n\n\nMonday 19 January 2026\, 14.00 – 16.00\n\n\nSunday 1 March 2026\, 11.00 – 13.00\n\n\nSunday 1 March 2026\, 14.00 – 16.00\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\nJames Freemantle is proprietor of the St James Park Press\, established in 2014. All editions from the St James Park Press are printed by hand\, and these include George Orwell’s works\, 1984 and Animal Farm; An Albion in the Antarctic; The Beauty of Byrne\, about Oliver Byrne’s edition of Euclid; and the forthcoming Paradise Lost. \nEvent information\n\nTickets are £20 per workshop.\nThe workshops will take place in person in the printing workshop in the Schola Musicae in in the Bodleian Old Library. How to get here.\nAll venues for this event are wheelchair accessible. More about accessibility at our site.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Maggie O'Farrell LAND at The Sheldonian Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sheldonian Theatre for an evening with Maggie O’Farrell\, author of the bestselling Hamnet as she discusses her new book\, Land \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for what promises to be a brilliant evening with bestselling author Maggie O’Farrell\, as we celebrate the release of her new novel\, Land. \nInspired by the mapping of Ireland in the mid nineteenth century\, the new novel from the author of Hamnet is at once intimate and epic: a portrait of a family navigating a legacy of upheaval and loss with love and hope. Land is a novel about separation and reunion\, tragedy and recovery\, colonisation and rebellion. It is a story of buried treasure\, overlapping lives\, ancient woodland\, persistent ghosts\, a particularly loyal dog\, and how\, when it comes to both land and history\, nothing ever goes away. \nMaggie O’Farrell is the author of nine previous novels\, including Hamnet which won Waterstones Book of the Year in 2020 and the Women’s Prize for Fiction in the same year. Hamnet has been made into a film and Maggie co-wrote the screenplay with Academy-Award-winning director Chloé Zhao. The film has already won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes and the audience award at multiple film festivals including Telluride\, Toronto and London. Maggie’s bestselling titles include the novels After You’d Gone\, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox\, The Hand that First Held Mine and her memoir I Am\, I Am\, I Am. \nThe Book & Ticket bundle incudes a copy of Land (RRP £25)\, stamped with an author signature exclusive to the Land tour. \n\n12 £

SUMMARY:God's Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:A book launch\, with reception. Will be recorded as a live taping for Premier \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the launch of Tom Wright’s newest book\,God’s Homecoming \, including a live taping of the ‘Unbelievable’ podcast with Premier. \nAbout the event\nFor generations\, many Christians have imagined the Bible’s story as one in which we leave earth behind and “go to heaven” when we die. But\, as Tom Wright has spent decades patiently explaining\, from Surprised by Hope to his latest major work God’s Homecoming\, that is simply not the scriptural narrative. The Bible does not give us a tale of souls escaping upward; it gives us the astonishing announcement that God intends to come and dwell with us. \nIn this special Oxford evening\, Tom Wright will guide us through the central biblical theme that has been hidden in plain sight: God’s longing to make creation his home. Drawing on careful historical scholarship\, robust biblical exegesis\, and the earthy\, hope-filled tone familiar from his recent conversations on the Ask NT Wright Anything podcast\, Tom will show how the whole sweep of Scripture\, from Genesis to Revelation moves towards one destination: the renewal of all things through God’s personal presence. \nFollowing the taped interview\, there will be a time for audience questions\, followed by a reception\, book sale and signing. All are welcome! \nWycliffe Hall has set itself the modest task of fostering a New Renaissance of Christian scholarship\, leadership and culture. As both a Christian community and a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford\, we want to see transformational scholarship\, leadership and culture\, born out of Christian community\, offering the truth\, beauty and goodness of the gospel to the world. \nTo find up more about the New Renaissance Project and related events and activities\, please visit our webpage and sign up for email alerts: Wycliffe’s New Renaissance Project continues growing | WYCLIFFE HALL \nEvent details\nDate: Monday 2nd March 2026 \nTime: 6-7.30pm\, followed by a drinks reception \nTickets: £6.50 per ticket. £22.50 includes your ticket and a hardback copy of God’s Homecoming. \nIn order to make this event accessible to as many people who want to come\, we have set the ticket price to only cover direct costs\, thanks to Tom’s generosity in giving his time \nVenue: Wycliffe Hall\, 52-54 Banbury Road\, Oxford\, OX2 6PW \nGetting here: Wycliffe Hall is on major bus routes. Limited parking may be available on site (please contact us by email if you have any special access requirements) and pay-and-display on-street parking is available close by in Norham Gardens. \nPhotography and filming: This event will include photography and filming for use by Wycliffe and Premier: please contact us directly if you have any questions about this: conferences@wycliffe.ox.ac.uk. \nAll are welcome: the event is open to the public\, but we are expecting to sell out quickly. You will need a ticket to attend. \nAbout our guests\nN.T. Wright\, who prepared for ordained ministry at Wycliffe Hall\, is one of the world’s leading New Testament scholars\, and a world authority on the apostle Paul. Wright is the author of over 80 academic and lay-level books such as Surprised by Hope\, The Day The Revolution Began and Paul: A Biography (writing under the name Tom Wright for a general audience). Wright is ordained in the Church of England and\, among other roles\, served as Bishop of Durham between 2003 – 2010. \nSince 2010\, N.T. Wright has been Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews. He is much in demand as a lecturer around the world and author of the bestselling For Everyone commentary series and the New Testament For Everyone Bible translation. In 2018\, Wright delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectures\, soon to be published as History and Eschatology: Jesus and the Promise of Natural Theology\, entitled Discerning the Dawn: History\, Eschatology and New Creation.
