SUMMARY:Pets & their People
DESCRIPTION:  11 March – 27 September 2026 \n ST Lee Gallery\, Weston Library \n Free admission\, no ticket required \nAbout the exhibition\nWe have been domesticating animals for over ten thousand years. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Brokenness and repair exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Venue:\n\nThe Glass Tank\, Oxford Brookes University\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nMonday\, 26 January 2026 to Friday\, 6 February 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\n9am – 5pm\n\n\n\nCost:\n\n0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInspired by the sublime beauty of techniques of visual repair across cultures\, these works invite reflection on brokenness and why it matters. \nIn recent years\, the traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery using lacquer\, often embellished with gold or other precious metals\, known as ‘kintsugi’ has fascinated and inspired not only contemporary artists\, but also pscyhologists\, philosophers\, scientists and archaeologists. But the idea of caring for something that is broken and finding beauty in its imperfection resonates much more widely. Whether we are living with the painful yet precious memories of loss\, or trying to reassemble places of belonging from the remnants of abandoned buildings\, brokenness and repair speak to our fundamental ways of being in the world. \nThrough sculpture\, sound\, images\, and pottery\, this exhibition creates a space of dialogue between Japanese aesthetics of brokenness and repair and those of other cultures. Each piece invites visitors to reflect on the complex\, sometimes challenging beauty of brokenness\, and the care and attention involved in repair. \nThe exhibition includes original works from Rob Simpkins\, Katie Taylor\, Johanna Tulloch\, Dan O’Brien\, Natasha Durie\, Juliet Eccles\, and Rachel Barbaresi\, as well as kintsugi pieces by Iku Nishikawa (Oxford Kintsugi). \nAll are invited to join us to meet the artists and organisers over wine and refreshments. \nThis exhibition and reception was made possible through the generous support of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nhttps://www.brookes.ac.uk/about-brookes/…\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brokennes… \ndobrien@brookes.ac.uk

SUMMARY:The Architectures of Infestation by Abingdon & Witney College
DESCRIPTION:Venue\, Timing and Cost\n\nVenue:\n\nThe Turrill Sculpture Garden\n\n\n\nDate(s):\n\nSaturday\, 7 March 2026 to Saturday\, 25 April 2026\n\n\n\nTiming:\n\nMon\, Fri – 9.30 – 5.00pm Tues\, Thurs 9.30 – 6.30pm Sat 9.30 – 4.00pm Closed Wed\, Sun\n\n\n\nCost:\n\nFree\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA striking new exhibition in the Turrill Sculpture Garden\, showcasing large scale sculptural works by Creative Futures (Level 1) and Foundation Art & Design students from Abingdon & Witney College.\nBringing together oversized insect sculptures and hand built ceramic watchtowers\, the exhibition explores themes of surveillance\, scale\, and the uneasy relationship between humans\, creatures\, and the structures we build.\nLevel 1 students took inspiration from bugs and specimens at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History\, enlarging tiny organisms into bold\, three foot long forms using wire\, modroc\, plaster\, and paint. These monumental insects playfully challenge our perceptions of the creepy crawly world.\nFoundation students created ceramic watchtowers inspired by the panopticon\, examining how architecture can control\, observe\, and influence behaviour. Their towers range from architectural to abstract\, each acting as a quiet sentinel within the garden.\nTogether\, these works transform the garden into a lively and thought provoking landscape—where creatures seem to roam and watchtowers hold their ground. Architectures of Infestation invites visitors to explore\, imagine\, and rethink the boundaries between the natural and the built. \n\n\n\n\nFurther Information\n\nContact Details:\n\n\nKatherine Shock Sculpture Co-ordintor 07922205946. kshock1@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Collective Learning Day Course
DESCRIPTION:Develop critical thinking skills and curatorial approaches for collaborating with communities.\nExplore the shifting culture of curating projects with communities\, considering changes in practice\, language and legacy. \nThis course initiates a collective learning approach. It takes a systems view on a range of institutional strategies to develop collaborative projects\, considering both the assumptions and the bigger picture\, the successes and the challenges of programming with local audiences. \nWhat to Expect: \nWe’ll begin by considering Modern Art Oxford as a site of research\, looking at the gallery’s beginnings\, its approach to working with communities\, and present day programmes in the wider historical narratives of alternative art spaces. How do the viewpoints of the start to consider the different view points of the institution\, the practitioner or curator\, and the community differ? \nWe will collectively review our insights from Modern Art Oxford’s archive materials before turning our attention to what it means to use Systems Thinking – a practice which provides a space for practitioners across different disciplines\, sectors and from different backgrounds to come together. How can we identify our own assumptions\, judgements and boundaried ways of thinking? How do these influence and motivate our responses in each situation\, or the systems we build? \n£50 (+4.88 Eventbrite Fee)

SUMMARY:Oxford Surgical Innovation Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 8th International Oxford Surgical Innovation (OxSI) Conference\, to be held on 19th March 2026 at St. Catherine’s College. \n\n\n\n\nThis year\, OxSI offers a dynamic\, full-day program showcasing recent innovations in surgical practice and policy\, designed to inspire and challenge surgically inclined medical students and doctors. Through keynote lectures\, trainee presentations\, and hands-on workshops\, the conference explores how innovation translates from idea to impact across diverse surgical settings. \nWe are honored to feature plenary talks from leaders in the field\, including Mr. Ed Sideso on Innovations in thoracic aortic disease\, Dr. Harald Veen discussing Surgery in conflict zones\, Ms. Sumrit Bola on Advances in tumour markers in head and neck cancer\, followed by a closing address from Professor Peter Friend\, who will share the journey of Taking an idea from concept to market through the OrganOx story\, a striking example of successful surgical innovation in practice. \nThe program also features dedicated student and trainee presentations\, providing a valuable platform for emerging surgeons to share their work and engage with peers and senior clinicians. \nAdditionally\, OxSI conducts a unique interactive workshop program. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through practical sessions including Ultrasound for vascular access\, Rib fixation\, Laparoscopic skills\, and Suturing and knot tying. Complementing these are hybrid workshops focused on professional development\, such as How to pitch an idea\, Getting started in academic publishing\, Applying for surgical training\, and Civility and teamwork in surgical practice\, equipping attendees both online and in-person with skills beyond the operating theatre. \nThe conference is hosted at St Catherine’s College\, a modern Oxford college affectionately known as St Catz. Founded in 1962 and designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen\, its Grade I listed buildings embody the College motto “Nova et Vetera”: the new and the old\, making it a fitting venue for a conference dedicated to empowering innovation\, while honoring the foundations of tradition. \nThroughout the day\, attendees are encouraged to engage with our poster sessions and visit the sponsors’ fair\, where leading industry partners will showcase emerging technologies and products shaping the future of surgery. We are enormously grateful to our sponsors\, whose support makes OxSI possible. \nWhether you are forging your surgical career or actively shaping your path through training\, OxSI 2026 aims to equip\, inspire\, and immerse you in the evolving world of surgical innovation. We look forward to welcoming you to Oxford. \nBest wishes\, \nThe OxSI 2026 Organizing Committee \nFrom £11.55
