Booking is essential \nTickets will be available soon \n\nWith Juliet Heslewood\, art historian \nFrom ancient times\, the unique appearance of trees has been recorded for multiple reasons. \nThey play their part in interiors or as sculptural supports. Biblical trees serve symbolic purposes whereas in landscape painting they form identifiable features of the natural world. Japanese print-makers used trees as compositional devices. Artists such as Paul Nash or Ai Wei Wei used trees to reveal political ideas. Single trees have also appeared as an unusual form of portraiture. \nIn this talk Juliet Heslewood will discuss some of these intriguing depictions of trees in art. \n \nEarly Morning\, Samuel Palmer\, 1825\, pen and brown ink with brush in sepia \n\nThis is the second talk in this series of two. Book below \n\nWith Dr Louise Hardiman\, art historian and academic \nUkraine is known for its fertile steppe lands and a strong agricultural tradition; a deep respect for nature is encoded in Ukrainian national identity. \nBuilding upon the tradition of folk art\, images of flowers and trees appear often in art and design\, including icon painting\, embroidery\, furniture\, ceramics\, and the decoration of buildings. \n  \n \nMykola Samokysh\, Motifs of Ukrainian Ornament\, no. 1\, 1902\, embroidery with silk and gold. Chernihiv province. Archaeological exhibition of 1902 in Kharkiv \n\n  \nIn this talk\, Louise will explore works of art and craft from across the centuries\, taking account of both local and western European influences. \nA key emphasis will be the cultural significance of plant imagery\, including its folk meanings and its role in shaping Ukrainian nationhood. \nDr Louise Hardiman is an independent academic specialising in Russian and East European art. Book below \nTea\, coffee\, and cakes will be served in the Headley Lecture Theatre from 2pm \n\nWith Emma House\, curator at the Garden Museum in London \nJoin us for a special talk exploring the shared histories of two remarkable institutions. \nGuest speaker Emma House\, Curator at London’s Garden Museum\, will trace the rich connections between the Ashmolean and the Garden Museum through the lens of the exhibition In Bloom: How Plants Changed Our World. \nIt was thanks to the collections and gardens of John Tradescant the Elder (c. 1570-1638) and his son John Tradescant the Younger (1608-1662)\, that the original Garden Museum in London came into being. The Tradescant Collection as it became known\, was later given to the University of Oxford by our founder\, Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) and combined with an older University collection to become the Ashmolean Museum\, which opened in 1683. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeft: The Tradescant Tomb next to the Garden Museum in London. If you want to talk to the poets\, most of us are friendly! \nThe March tour will be inside the Mediterranean World Gallery on the first floor.
