SUMMARY:MILESTONES IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING 3: POST IMPRESSIONISTS
DESCRIPTION:With Alice Foster\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTue 7 Apr 2026\, 11am–12pm\n\n\n\n\nAt the Museum and Online\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event takes place in-person at the Museum\, and online via Zoom. \nTickets are £8 each. Booking is essential. \nBook below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe third in a series of talks examining traditions of landscape painting focuses on the Post Impressionists. \nThe Post Impressionists at the end of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th re-shaped nature on the canvas. \nPhotography had freed them from verisimilitude\, which allowed them to shape colour and form without describing exactly what they saw. Nature was the starting point for them and they created ‘equivalents for nature’. Alice Foster’s talk will feature artists such as Boudin\, Cezanne van Gogh and Gauguin and their works in our collection. \n \nDunes at Berck: Cloudy Weather\, Eugène Boudin\, 1882\, oil on canvas. On display in the Pissarro Gallery 65 in the Museum \n\n  \nThere are three talks in this series. Each talk needs to be booked separately. The other talks are: \n\nTalk 1 – Milestones in Landscape Painting: Dutch Painters – Tue 24 Mar 2026\nTalk 2 – Milestones in Landscape Painting: British Romantic Painters – Tue 31 Mar 2026\n\nThis event is part of our Shaped by Nature 2026 season of events. \n\nBOOKING\nThis event takes place in-person at the Museum\, and online via Zoom. \nTickets are £8 each. Booking is essential \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please email us at publicprogrammes@ashmus.ox.ac.uk

SUMMARY:MILESTONES IN LANDSCAPE PAINTING TALK 2: BRITISH ROMANTICS
DESCRIPTION:With Alice Foster\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTue 31 Mar 2026\, 11am–12pm\n\n\n\n\nAt the Museum and Online\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event takes place in-person at the Museum\, and online via Zoom. \nTickets are £8 each. Booking is essential. Book below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe second talk in our series examining traditions of landscape painting\, focuses on the British Romantics of the 19th century. \nThe British Romantic painters in the early 19th century captured nature as a visual homage to God’s creation\, and on a big scale. \nTheir aim was to express the power of nature in all its forms ~ countryside\, mountains\, sea. Like the 17th-century Dutch painters they made the weather\, often stormy and untamed\, a focus of their artworks. Mankind sometimes appeared insignificant and vulnerable in these images. Artists like Turner and Constable will be discussed and with reference to their works in our collection. \n \nBoscastle\, Cornwall\, J.M.W. Turner\, c. 1814\, watercolour over graphite with pen & black ink © Ashmolean Museum \n\n  \nThere are three talks in this series. Each talk needs to be booked separately. The other talks are: \n\nTalk 1 – Milestones in Landscape Painting: Dutch Painters – Tue 24 Mar 2026\nTalk 3 – Milestones in Landscape Painting: Post Impressionists – Tue 7 Apr 2026\n\nThis event is part of our Shaped by Nature 2026 season of events. \n\nBOOKING\nThis event takes place in-person at the Museum\, and online via Zoom. \nTickets are £8 each. Booking is essential. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please email us at publicprogrammes@ashmus.ox.ac.uk

Book below \n\nWith Juliet Heslewood\, Author and Art Historian \nThe last in a series of four talks examining four communities of French artists: The Barbizon school\, the Painters of Pont Aven. Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles\, and The Fauves – the ‘Wild Beasts’ of the Mediterranean. \nJust over a 100 years ago\, St Tropez was a small fishing village on the Mediterranean\, accessible only by boat. The painter Signac\, who loved sailing\, encouraged others to join him there. \nWhen Matisse visited\, he\, like others\, followed Signac’s Pointillist style but on reaching Collioure\, further along the coast\, he pursued his own ideas\, struck by the brilliant sunlight and dared to use colour in a vibrant un-naturalistic way.  He was joined by Derain who painted in a similar style that caused them to be called Fauves – wild beasts. \nTogether with others\, they created a startling view of the coast that was innovative but well represented their unique experience of this popular part of the world. \n \nLe bonheur de vivre\, Henri Matisse\, 1905-1906\, Oil on canvas. In the collection of the Barnes Foundation \n\n  \nThere are 4 talks in this series. Each talk needs to be booked separately: \n\nTalk 1 – The Barbizon School – Sat 15 Nov 2025\nTalk 2 – The Pont Aven Painters – Sat 13 Dec 2025\nTalk 3 – Van Gogh & Gauguin – Sat 24 Jan 2026\nTalk 4 – The Fauves – Sat 21 Feb 2026\n\nThis event is part of our Connect & Collaborate season of events. \n\nBOOKING\nThis event takes place in-person at the Museum\, and online via Zoom. \nThe in-person talk is now fully booked but you can still book for the online talk \nTickets are £8 each.
