SUMMARY:Justyna Zańko Violin Recital
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nInternationally celebrated Polish violinist Justyna Zanko returns.\n\n\n\nFollowing her acclaimed Oxford debut earlier this year\, internationally celebrated Polish violinist Justyna Zańko returns to perform an evening of exceptional artistry. \nRenowned for her virtuosic technique\, refined musical sensitivity\, and bold interpretive character\, Zańko presents a program that traverses the expressive spectrum of the solo violin repertoire – from the intricate Passacaglia of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber to the brilliant Caprices of Niccolò Paganini and Henryk Wieniawski. \nCritics have praised her performances for their “immense variety and contrast\,” highlighting the fluidity with which she moves between introspective lyricism and virtuosic brilliance. \nThis recital promises a rare and memorable musical experience for all who appreciate classical music. \nWe look forward to welcoming you on Friday\, 29th May at 6 p.mat St Mary & St John’s Church. \nSuggested donations: £10(including tea and cake)In support of the church tower restoration. \n… \n“Polish violinist Justyna Zańko is an internationally recognized soloist and chamber musician whose artistry is defined by luminous tone\, technical finesse\, and a rare interpretive sensitivity. Represented by Eva Artistic Management\, she performs across Europe and the United States as both a celebrated performer and a visionary cultural builder. \nHer career has taken her to some of the world’s most prestigious stages\, including Carnegie Hallin New York\, the Elgar Room at London’s Royal Albert Hall in London\, Beethoven House in Bonn\, the Mozarteum in Salzburg\, Palais de Monaco in Paris\, the Malta Society of Arts\, and Green Room Teatru Rjal in Valletta. She is a laureate of multiple international competitions\, including first prizes at the Golden Classical Music Awards\, Grand Prize Virtuoso\, and the Bach International Music Competition. \nA sought-after guest at international festivals\, she has appeared at the Wieniawski Brothers International Festival\, the Andrzej Nikodemowicz International Festival “Time and Sound\,” Virtuosi Violin Festival (UK)\, TEDx Lublin\, and the Victoria International Arts Festival in Malta. Her performances are noted for their refinement\, expressive depth\, and delicacy — hallmarks of her distinctive artistic identity. \nA graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the UK\, Justyna refined her craft under legendary violinists including Rimma Sushanskaya — the last student of David Oistrakh — as well as Igor Oistrakh\, Zakhar Bron\, Yair Kless\, Anthony Marwood\, Roman Lasocki\, and Tadeusz Gadzina. \nAlongside her concert career\, Justyna is the Artistic Director of VirtuClassic and President of the Virtuoso Music Foundation\, where she champions music education\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, and cultural accessibility. Her leadership has resulted in several original artistic initiatives\, including the International VirtuClassic Festival\, the VirtuClassic International Music Competition\, and the concert series Classics in the Crown (Klasyka w Koronie). \nAmong her signature projects is Intimate Violin Sessions\, an international performance concept she created to bring classical music back to its most essential purpose: a direct\, personal encounter between artist and listener. Presented in elegant\, atmospheric spaces across Europe — and in online editions reaching audiences throughout the Americas — the series blends high artistic standards with modern sensitivity. Each edition allows listeners to experience masterworks from Bach\, Biber\, Paganini\, Wieniawski\, and Saint-Saëns at close range\, transforming the traditional recital into an immersive\, conversational journey through sound. \nDeeply committed to the next generation\, she supports young musicians through her foundation’s programs and has developed her own method for enhancing concentration and artistic preparation. \nElegant\, expressive\, and continually expanding her international presence\, Justyna Zańko stands as both a captivating violinist and a creator of meaningful musical experiences that bring listeners closer to the heart of classical music.“

SUMMARY:Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi\, The Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:A unique concert will take place at the cosy Holywell Music Room on the 23rd of May. \nJoin us for an evening featuring the famous Antonio Vivaldi cycle «The Four Seasons» in the unique interpretation of contemporary composer Max Richter\, performed by the extraordinary Mystery Ensemble. \nMax Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries. The European Film Academy voted him the best film composer in 2008. He reinterpreted Antonio Vivaldi’s music in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi\, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works. After its release in 2012\, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries. \nMax Richter has recorded 12 solo albums and performed at the London Barbican\, the Paris Philharmonic\, the Sydney Opera and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, and among his projects are the Sum Opera and the Infra ballet (choreographed by Wayne MacGregor) at Covent Garden. Richter’s music is heard in many performances around the world\, as well as in the films «Shutter Island» by Martin Scorsese\, «Last Love on Earth» by David Mackenzie\, and «Waltz with Bashir»\, for the soundtrack to which he received the award «Best Composer» from the European Film Academy. \nThe Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi is one of the most famous and frequently performed works of classical music. The Italian master wittily and gracefully captured in music the way his contemporaries saw the world and nature. The Vivaldi cycle is both a philosophical reflection on a magnificent illustrated «calendar» and a «sightseeing tour» of Italy. \nDuration: 60 minutes \nDoors open at least 30 minutes before the concert. \nOut of respect for guests and performers\, late entry may not be permitted. We cannot guarantee your original seats after the concert begins. \nAbout venue \nHolywell Music Room is one of Europe’s most historic and distinguished concert halls\, located in the heart of Oxford. Opened in 1748\, it is the oldest purpose-built music room in Europe still in regular use — a space that has welcomed centuries of musicians\, scholars\, and audiences. \nThe Hall’s elegant Georgian architecture\, refined proportions\, and beautifully restored interior create an atmosphere of intimacy and grace. Soft natural light\, classical detailing\, and a finely balanced acoustic make the space uniquely suited to chamber music\, vocal recitals\, and historically informed performances. \nRenowned for its clarity and warmth of sound\, Holywell Music Room offers an exceptional listening experience where every nuance can be heard with precision and depth. Its relatively compact capacity ensures a close connection between performer and audience\, preserving the spirit of 18th-century salon concerts while supporting contemporary artistic excellence. \nIn the scholarly and cultural heart of Oxford\, Holywell Music Room stands as a testament to the enduring power of live performance — a venue where history\, intellect\, and music converge in perfect harmony. \nPerformers  \nMystery Ensemble \nMystery Ensemble is a group of professional musicians performing unique programs in non-standard venues around the UK. \nExperience outstanding works from different eras\, experimental music\, tributes\, and world soundtracks of films and series\, as well as absolutely unique programs and immersive shows. SUMMARY:Summer Opera Haydn: LE PESCATRICI (THE FISHER GIRLS)
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nMusical Director: Steven Devine Producer: Michael Burden. Performed in an English translation by Gilly French and Jeremy Gray \n\n\n\n\nThe Evening’s Events\n6.00pm Drinks in the Cloisters\n6.30pm Opera Act I\n7.45pm Picnic Interval in the Cloisters (Bring your own picnic)\n9.00pm Opera Act II\n10.30pm Curtain down \nSynopsis\nHaydn’s Le Pescatrici (The Fisher Girls) was the composer’s first full-length opera. The libretto was by Carlo Goldoni\, who\, with a mixture of comic and serious characters\, provided witty social commentary. The story tells the tale of Lindoro\, Prince of Sorrento\, who is in search of the lost Princess of Benevento; he wishes to marry her and retore her to her rightful throne. She was last seen at the fishing village of Taranto\, where two fisher girls – Nerina and Lesbina – live. When the Prince arrives\, they both pretend that they are the Princess\, in order to catch the his eye. To do so\, they ditch their current lovers\, the fishermen Fresollino and Burlotto; the men in turn seek revenge by trying to pass off each other’s girlfriends as the Princess. However\, by means of a dramatic identification of a jeweled dagger\, it emerges that Eurilda is the Princess; she has been in Mastricco’s care all the time. \nLe Pescatrici was\, like Haydn’s other operas\, premiered in the theatre at Eszterháza\, the residence of the composer patron; the first performance was on 16 September 1770 to mark the wedding celebrations of Countess Lamberg\, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy’s niece\, and Count Poggi. The staging was extravagant and a huge success\, but the destruction of the vocal and orchestral parts in the opera house fire of 1779 has meant that the surviving work is a reconstruction of Haydn’s original and receives few modern stagings because of it. \n\nLocation\n\n\n\nNew College\n\nHolywell Street \nOxford OX1 3BN
