DESCRIPTION:Friday 18 September\, 6.00 – 7.30pm \nHistory of Science Museum\, Broad Street\, OX1 3AZ \nBooking essential  |  Tickets £0.00 \n\nAbout the event\nWhat can surveying instruments\, grain measures and everyday measuring practices tell us about science\, work and life in India? \nJoin researchers and collectors from India and Oxford for an evening of objects\, conversation and interconnected histories. \nAbout Colonial Standards\nThe Colonial Standards community research project provided an opportunity to bring together anthropology\, social history and the history of science through the study of measurement and standardisation. \nBy combining ethnographic approaches with collections-based and archival research\, the project explored how standards are created\, negotiated and experienced in everyday life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the night\n5.45 – 6.00 pm: Arrive \nMeet the Colonial Standards team to relax and chat. \n6.00 – 6:40 pm: Conversations in the Basement Gallery  \nA chance to mingle and talk with team members\, who will bring five objects to stimulate discussion. \n6.40 – 6:45 pm: Pause to reflect \nIntroducing the Colonial Standards project and sharing the evening’s conversations \n6.45 – 7.10 pm: Reflections from a collector in the Entrance Gallery \nMr Basavaraja will share his experience of collecting scientific instruments\, followed by questions and discussion. \n7.10 – 7.30 pm: Drinks reception (non-alcoholic) and introduction to new display Who decides what counts as a standard? \nStay and chat with the project team over a soft drink. \n7.30 pm: Event ends \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n  Apologies\, we cannot offer disabled\, level access to the Museum. \n  \nMeet the project team\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr JC Niala is Deputy Director and Head of Research\, Teaching and Collections at the History of Science Museum\, University of Oxford\, and Principal Investigator of Colonial Standards. \nHer research explores how knowledge is produced\, shared and contested\, with a particular interest in the role that museums\, collections and communities play in shaping historical understanding. \nShe works extensively with collaborative and community-based research methodologies\, bringing together objects\, archives\, oral histories and contemporary perspectives to investigate how knowledge travels across time and place. \nHer work is highly collaborative and international\, often connecting researchers\, practitioners\, collections and communities across institutional and national boundaries. Through Colonial Standards\, she is particularly interested in how partnerships between India and the United Kingdom can generate new approaches to researching cultural heritage\, scientific instruments and the social histories of knowledge. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSenthil Babu D. is an historian of mathematics based at the French Institute of Pondicherry\, in south India\, where he is involved in studies concerning Nature\, Knowledge and Labour. \nHe is coordinating the research programme on the Social History of Vernacular Mathematical Practices in India. \nHe has authored the book\, Mathematics and Society: Numbers and Measures in early modern South India (Oxford University Press\, 2022). \nHe is a member of the editorial board of the series\, Verum Factum: Studies in Political Epistemology. \nHe is also a member of the Politically Mathematics Collective in India. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTogether Maren Ellerman and Naajia Ahmed have established the collective The New Cartographers. \nTheir ambition is to create a database that digitally maps intangible cultural heritage with a range of lasting resources that is both truly accessible to a wide range of audiences and democratises this information. \nThey will achieve this through: \n\nacademic research that is translated in a manner that is fun and engaging to the general public\nbeautifully crafted documentaries in order to conserve multi-sensory\nexhibitions that create physical spaces of learning.\n\nNaajia is a curator with a background in designing\, developing\, and delivering innovative\, high-quality and inclusive exhibitions and research projects. \nShe centres her practice on an empathic and inclusive approach to create spaces that highlight under-represented narratives with dignity in order to conserve and protect stories that are at risk of being lost. \nHer work includes research\, reports\, writing and exhibitions at the V&A\, National Maritime Museum\, House of Lords\, UCL and the Museum of Watford. \nThroughout her projects\, Naajia seeks to be a champion of marginalised voices and the threats that jeopardise their stories being told. \nMaren is a dance artist turned producer\, developing and delivering participatory arts projects in partnership with artists\, cultural organisations\, mental health professionals and activists across the globe. \nShe believes that art has the power to shift social consciousness and is dedicated to empowering communities through creativity\, ensuring that people are not just recipients\, but active participants and contributors in the process. \nMaren aims to strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of the communities she works with\, increasing self-esteem\, confidencen and a re-imagining of one’s identity. She is also Creative Director of grassroots dance & social change organisation Rain Crew\, who build inclusive communities through dance\, that help people proactively celebrate and share their authentic selves. \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Shankar Nair’s research focuses on the social and economic history of science and technology and its relationship to the history of empire in South Asia. \nHe is interested in the global and comparative history of science and technology\, with an emphasis on production and knowledge embedded in practice. \nAs Postdoctoral Researcher on the Colonial Standards project\, his research seeks to bring the collections in the History of Science Museum\, University of Oxford in conversation with practitioners and users of mathematical instruments in late colonial India\, tracing the institutional arrangements\, the various ways of knowing\, and forms of labour that went into the construction of knowledge in surveying\, astronomy\, and navigation as these ideas and techniques travelled across the world.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About: Surveillance How should we track disease?
DESCRIPTION:How do we talk about surveillance—and its role in tracking and preventing outbreaks of disease?\nDisease surveillance helps us spot outbreaks early\, track patterns\, and look after public health. But it can also feel uncomfortable. As more everyday data is used to predict and prevent pandemics\, questions about trust\, transparency\, and who gets a say become harder to ignore. \nWe’re excited to share our second ‘Let’s Talk About’ event created with the Pandemic Sciences Institute. Join us at the History of Science Museum for conversations exploring questions such as ‘how do you identify emerging pandemic threats?’ and ‘how should we navigate everyday data — from social media to wearable devices — being used in public health?’. \nYou’ll hear from four thought-provoking speakers who will guide small breakout discussions centred around unique objects that tell a story about their work. You’ll also have an opportunity to contribute to the conversation as we explore how all of us can shape future research on these topics. Will hearing each other’s stories shift how we think? \nLet’s talk about surveillance. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details:\n\n\n\n\n\n17:30 – Arrive at the Entrance Gallery  \nExplore our A Healthy Future for All exhibition curated by HSM and PSI. Chat with the curators and speakers. \n17: 45 – Welcome  \nA welcome from our Museum Director Dr Silke Ackermann and an introduction to our speakers from Dr Sean Elias (PSI). \n18:00 – Head to the Basement Gallery  \nSpeakers will lead small group conversations before we come together to share discussion highlights and have time for your questions. \n19:00–19:30 – Keep the Conversation Going  \nSpeakers and curators will be around to carry on the conversation in the Entrance Gallery. \nApologies\, we cannot offer disabled\, level access to the Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description \nYou’re invited to explore the History of Science Museum after dark through guided creative writing with Megan at The Writers’ Greenhouse. \nEveryone’s welcome\, from history\, science\, or writing buffs to complete newbies in any or all of those. \nIn this workshop you will: \n\nDiscover the astrolabes up close with a museum curator\nTake part in a writing workshop with a published poet and experienced teacher to create something that delights you\nCollaborate in a friendly supportive atmosphere to create a poem about the museum’s astrolabes – no experience necessary\n\nAll in the magical space of the museum’s vaulted Basement Gallery and sweeping Upper Gallery\, after dark. \nPlease note: we regret that there is no step-free access to the museum.
