Booking is essential \nTickets coming soon \n\nWith Nicola Jarvis\, embroiderer and illustrator \n  \nThis workshop will explore the art of botanical drawing/painting combined with embroidery. \nIt will focus on one of the founding objects from the Ashmolean collection\, the ‘Tradescant’s Orchard 1620-29’ manuscript attributed to John Tradescant The Elder\, which is currently on display in the In Bloom: How Plants Changed the World exhibition. \nThis class is designed to guide attendees in the painting and stitching elements of a composition inspired by the ‘Flanders Cherry’  illustration. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n \nFlanders Cherry’ illustration from Tradescant’s Orchard\, 1620-29\, watercolour and ink on paper © Bodleian Libraries \n\n\n\n\n\n \nExample embroidery design by Nicola Jarvis\, taking inspiration from the Flanders Cherry’ illustration in Tradescant’s Orchard \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nDay 1 – create a painting of ‘Flanders Cherry’ on cloth\, learning how to mix and shade using fabric paints to complete the illustration. \nDay 2 – learn the techniques required to complete the embroidery: \n\nConstruct a three-dimensional cherry fruit by wrapping thread on a round\, wooden bead\nCreate a raised leaf form by working with wire couched around the outline and along the veins\nUtilise a range of surface stitches to enhance the wings and shell of a butterfly\, caterpillar and snail respectively\n\nParticipants will receive enough tuition to be able to complete the embroidery at home\, the kit supplied to them will contain all necessary materials. \nThis event is part of our Shaped by Nature season of events. \n\nBOOKING\nTwo-day practical sessions in the Ashmolean Learning Studio \nTickets are £225 for the workshops spanning over two days \nTickets coming soon \nIf you have any questions\, please email us at publicprogrammes@ashmus.ox.ac.uk

Biblical trees serve symbolic purposes whereas in landscape painting they form identifiable features of the natural world. Japanese print-makers used trees as compositional devices. Artists such as Paul Nash or Ai Wei Wei used trees to reveal political ideas. Book below \n\nWith Dr Louise Hardiman\, art historian and academic \nUkraine is known for its fertile steppe lands and a strong agricultural tradition; a deep respect for nature is encoded in Ukrainian national identity. \nBuilding upon the tradition of folk art\, images of flowers and trees appear often in art and design\, including icon painting\, embroidery\, furniture\, ceramics\, and the decoration of buildings. \n  \n \nMykola Samokysh\, Motifs of Ukrainian Ornament\, no. 1\, 1902\, embroidery with silk and gold.
