Book below \nTea\, coffee\, and cakes will be served in the Headley Lecture Theatre from 2pm \n\nWith Emma House\, curator at the Garden Museum in London \nJoin us for a special talk exploring the shared histories of two remarkable institutions. \nGuest speaker Emma House\, Curator at London’s Garden Museum\, will trace the rich connections between the Ashmolean and the Garden Museum through the lens of the exhibition In Bloom: How Plants Changed Our World. \nIt was thanks to the collections and gardens of John Tradescant the Elder (c. 1570-1638) and his son John Tradescant the Younger (1608-1662)\, that the original Garden Museum in London came into being. Booking is essential. \nBook below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe third in a series of talks examining traditions of landscape painting focuses on the Post Impressionists. \nThe Post Impressionists at the end of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th re-shaped nature on the canvas. \nPhotography had freed them from verisimilitude\, which allowed them to shape colour and form without describing exactly what they saw. Nature was the starting point for them and they created ‘equivalents for nature’. Book below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe second talk in our series examining traditions of landscape painting\, focuses on the British Romantics of the 19th century. \nThe British Romantic painters in the early 19th century captured nature as a visual homage to God’s creation\, and on a big scale. \nTheir aim was to express the power of nature in all its forms ~ countryside\, mountains\, sea. Like the 17th-century Dutch painters they made the weather\, often stormy and untamed\, a focus of their artworks. Mankind sometimes appeared insignificant and vulnerable in these images. The tour takes in Somerville and Balliol Colleges\, acknowledges the part played at St John’s and by the old Indian Institute on Catte Street. You’ll be introduced to the first British university educated Indian woman\, Sikh princesses\, two revolutionaries and a First World War fighter pilot.
