Book below \n\nWith Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe second talk in our series examining traditions of landscape painting\, focuses on the British Romantics of the 19th century. \nThe British Romantic painters in the early 19th century captured nature as a visual homage to God’s creation\, and on a big scale. \nTheir aim was to express the power of nature in all its forms ~ countryside\, mountains\, sea. Like the 17th-century Dutch painters they made the weather\, often stormy and untamed\, a focus of their artworks. Mankind sometimes appeared insignificant and vulnerable in these images. Booking is essential. \nPlease note these workshops are now fully booked. \n\nWith artist John Somerscales \n  \nTaking inspiration from the natural landscape\, professional artist John Somerscales will help you learn how to create watercolours in the right way\, while having fun. \nIn these practical sessions you will be guided through all the major watercolour techniques. You will be shown each stage of the watercolour process to help you form a solid grounding\, from which you can go on to produce your own successful and impressive watercolour paintings. \n \nImprovised Landscape watercolour by John Somerscales \n\n  \nTechniques covered will include learning about graduated and wet-in-wet washes\, and you will look at glazing\, using the dry brush technique and how to make descriptive and textural marks with the brush including ideas on how to create skies and trees. \nAfter some time spent on colour mixing\, you will gradually work towards putting all these elements together to create simple but loose and effective landscapes. \nAll materials provided. Why did they come and how did they fare? This tour by Stephen Barker begins with a brief history of Anglo-India relations since the early 1600s\, with a visit to the Ashmolean Museum and a visit to the Moghuls in India Gallery. The tour takes in Somerville and Balliol Colleges\, acknowledges the part played at St John’s and by the old Indian Institute on Catte Street. You’ll be introduced to the first British university educated Indian woman\, Sikh princesses\, two revolutionaries and a First World War fighter pilot.

If you want to talk to the poets\, most of us are friendly! \nThe March tour will be inside the Mediterranean World Gallery on the first floor. Book below \n\nWith Marion Davies\, award-winning fine art documentary photographer \nIn this fascinating talk\, Marion Davies will discuss the life of her father\, Herbert Bier. DESCRIPTION:With Alice Foster\, Art Historian \nThe first in a series of three talks examining three traditions of landscape painting. Talk 1 focuses on Dutch painters.. \nIn the 17th century\, the Dutch painters were among the early responders to nature\, celebrating it as a subject in its own right\, and presenting a natural depiction of the landscape. \nFor the first time in Western art the weather was frequently alluded to\, because it impinged on artists’ daily lives. \nThe paintings were often small-scale\, because they were destined for the homes of the Dutch merchants. This talk will feature works by artists such as Avercamp\, Cuyp and Ruisdael\, and discuss others in our collection.

Bags and coats can be stored within the Print Room during this visit. \n\nStudy day to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of artist and printmaker Muirhead Bone. \nJoin us to celebrate the work of landscape etcher Sir Muirhead Bone. Born in 1876\, Bone was Britain’s first official war artist and produced more views for the Oxford Almanack than any other artist. \nThis special study day\, led by Harry Dickinson\, will explore Bone’s early years in Glasgow\, his pre-First World War urban landscapes and war work\, his travels in Spain and his close association with Oxford. \nYou will have the opportunity to see a wide range of his prints and drawings first-hand\, including works from a private collection. \n\n \nThe Ashmolean and Balliol College from Beaumont Street\, Sir Muirhead Bone\, 1939\, black chalk\, with some graphite indications \n\n\nBOOKING \nTickets are FREE for this in-person event. There is a maximum capacity of 15 attendees for this event. Design it as a fan\, a little book\, a box\, or something completely unique. \nOnce it’s ready\, take your textured creation on an adventure around the Museum. As you look at objects and artworks\, search for connections between what you see and the textures you feel and learn about. \nThe Museum is full of objects made from many different materials\, but we can’t touch them to keep them safe. Book below \n\nWith Juliet Heslewood\, Author and Art Historian \nThe last in a series of four talks examining four communities of French artists: The Barbizon school\, the Painters of Pont Aven. Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles\, and The Fauves – the ‘Wild Beasts’ of the Mediterranean. \nJust over a 100 years ago\, St Tropez was a small fishing village on the Mediterranean\, accessible only by boat. The painter Signac\, who loved sailing\, encouraged others to join him there. \nWhen Matisse visited\, he\, like others\, followed Signac’s Pointillist style but on reaching Collioure\, further along the coast\, he pursued his own ideas\, struck by the brilliant sunlight and dared to use colour in a vibrant un-naturalistic way.  He was joined by Derain who painted in a similar style that caused them to be called Fauves – wild beasts. \nTogether with others\, they created a startling view of the coast that was innovative but well represented their unique experience of this popular part of the world. \n \nLe bonheur de vivre\, Henri Matisse\, 1905-1906\, Oil on canvas. DESCRIPTION:Wed 18 Feb 2026\, 10.30am or 2pm\n\n\n\n\nAt the Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHalf-day practical session in the Ashmolean Learning Studio \nChoose from two available times: 10.30am–1pm OR 2–4.30pm.\nEach session will be the same workshop. \nPlease note this workshop is now fully booked. \nTickets are £65 each for each half-day session. \n\nWith Asma Hashmi\, Printmaker \nA hands-on printmaking workshop exploring blind embossing using an etching press\, a technique that creates raised\, textured designs on paper without using ink. \nUsing an etching press. participants will press designs into thick\, dampened paper\, leaving behind beautifully tactile impressions that play with light and shadow. \nInspired by Museum artefacts and images\, participants will design and emboss their own unique prints using simple materials such as textured objects\, stencils\, and hand-cut shapes. \nYou’ll take home a series of striking\, embossed artworks. \nNo prior experience is needed\, just a willingness to experiment with form and texture! \n\nThis event is part of our Connect & Collaborate season of events. \n\nBOOKING\nHalf-day practical session in the Ashmolean Learning Studio \nThis event is now fully booked. \nTickets are £65 each for the half-day session. SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. The finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. SUMMARY:POETRY IN THE GALLERIES FEB 2026
DESCRIPTION:With Oxfordshire poets \nPoets from Oxford and surrounding areas will explore and celebrate the Museum’s pieces\, renowned or recherche\, intriguing or glorious and newly-acquired artworks. \nPoems will be recited next to the objects and artworks that inspired the poets. If you want to talk to the poets\, most of us are friendly! \nThe February tour will be inside the Modern Art Gallery on the third floor. This gallery features paintings and sculptures showing the diversity of 20th-century art: from expressive paintings of human figures\, to abstracted still lifes and entirely abstract compositions of colours and forms.
