DESCRIPTION:Sat 21 Mar 2026\, 10am-4pm\n\n\n\n\nAt the Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Exclusive Event for Members of the Ashmolean \nThis event is now fully booked. \nThis study day with Harry Dickinson will take place in the Museum’s Western Art Print Room. \nUnfortunately there is no step-free access to the Print Room. Bags and coats can be stored within the Print Room during this visit. \n\nStudy day to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of artist and printmaker Muirhead Bone. \nJoin us to celebrate the work of landscape etcher Sir Muirhead Bone. Born in 1876\, Bone was Britain’s first official war artist and produced more views for the Oxford Almanack than any other artist. \nThis special study day\, led by Harry Dickinson\, will explore Bone’s early years in Glasgow\, his pre-First World War urban landscapes and war work\, his travels in Spain and his close association with Oxford. \nYou will have the opportunity to see a wide range of his prints and drawings first-hand\, including works from a private collection. \n\n \nThe Ashmolean and Balliol College from Beaumont Street\, Sir Muirhead Bone\, 1939\, black chalk\, with some graphite indications \n\n\nBOOKING \nTickets are FREE for this in-person event. There is a maximum capacity of 15 attendees for this event. DESCRIPTION:Discover the techniques of Peter Lanyon\, the British painter from St Ives\, whose landscapes leant heavily towards abstraction\, with artist Kieran Stiles. \nThis workshop is all about the edges where elements meet in painting. What happens when water meets land\, or clouds collide with a cliff face\, or rain drives into a forest? \nYou will explore oil painting techniques and the methods of abstraction pioneered by the ground-breaking St Ives painter Peter Lanyon and the St Ives art of the 1940-60 which included drawn motifs such as circles\, arcs and other geometric forms and textures inspired by structures in the natural world.

Book below \n\nWith Juliet Heslewood\, Author and Art Historian \nThe last in a series of four talks examining four communities of French artists: The Barbizon school\, the Painters of Pont Aven. Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles\, and The Fauves – the ‘Wild Beasts’ of the Mediterranean. \nJust over a 100 years ago\, St Tropez was a small fishing village on the Mediterranean\, accessible only by boat. The painter Signac\, who loved sailing\, encouraged others to join him there. \nWhen Matisse visited\, he\, like others\, followed Signac’s Pointillist style but on reaching Collioure\, further along the coast\, he pursued his own ideas\, struck by the brilliant sunlight and dared to use colour in a vibrant un-naturalistic way.  He was joined by Derain who painted in a similar style that caused them to be called Fauves – wild beasts. \nTogether with others\, they created a startling view of the coast that was innovative but well represented their unique experience of this popular part of the world. \n \nLe bonheur de vivre\, Henri Matisse\, 1905-1906\, Oil on canvas. SUMMARY:The Drawing Project
DESCRIPTION:The Drawing Project is a collaborative work involving sixteen artists and two paintings from the Ashmolean Museum: The Forest Fire by Piero di Cosimo and The Exposition of Moses by Nicholas Poussin. The aim was to produce drawings that worked collectively as well as individually. \nThe artists produced drawings which were then assembled to become full-scale representations of the original paintings. The four assembled collaborative representations are made of fifteen individually drawn sections. Each artist produced their drawings to scale using a variety of drawing and painting media\, with some also working in collage. \nDuring eight months\, over sixty individual project drawings were produced and then assembled into four large drawings representing the original paintings. The finished assembled works are 1:1 representations of the original paintings; two in colour and two in black and white. Some of the artists have also produced additional work referencing the original paintings. \nAt the Ashmolean Museum\, there’s a wonderful opportunity for both families and adults to attend a workshop inspired by the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Pat Suet-Bik Hui 許雪碧 (b. 1943) is a US-based Hong Kong artist. This exhibition showcases her work alongside others who engage with the tradition of the ‘three perfections’ 三絕\, which brings together the three art forms of poetry\, calligraphy\, and painting. \nThe exhibition includes works by Hui\, her contemporaries\, her teacher Lui Shou-Kwan and others of his generation\, as well as earlier examples from the 17th\, 18th\, and 19th centuries. Seeing Hui alongside these other artists will give visitors the context to understand her as both innovator and standard-bearer of tradition. \nIn this tradition\, calligraphic brushstrokes are as integral to compositional balance as those used in painting. Likewise\, images conjured by a poem and those rendered in a painting combine to create effects neither can achieve alone. \nHui’s modern interpretation fuses abstract and semi-abstract washes of colour and ink with simple\, restrained calligraphy inscribing poems reflecting on a variety of themes\, from love\, to loss\, to the pleasures of drinking.

SUMMARY:IMAGES OF AUTHORITY PORTRAITS BETWEEN IRAN AND EUROPE
DESCRIPTION:As we grapple with the possibilities and excesses of our image-obsessed culture\, this free exhibition looks back at the way in which a specific kind of image – portraits – dominated the lives of three contemporaneous rulers: Fath Ali Shah Qajar (1797–1834)\, King George III (1760–1820)\, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1799–1814). \nJuxtaposing portraits on different media from across Iran\, Britain and France\, the display explores similar and unique strategies developed to convey the personal and political aspirations of these ambitious leaders and astute image-makers. \nDisplayed for the first time in over a century are also two recently restored Qajar paintings and some of the discoveries made during their conservation treatment.

SUMMARY:Daphne Wright: Deep-Rooted Things
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright and has been curated by Ashmolean director\, Xa Sturgis. \nConceived in partnership with the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin\, the exhibition will feature several new works which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in our Cast Gallery. \nDaphne Wright works in unfired clay and jesmonite and has long experimented with casting. \nCentral to the exhibition is Sons and Couch\, a life-size sculptural artwork cast in jesmonite of the artist’s sons\, made especially for this show. They have featured in their mother’s moving and personal work since an early age. This sculpture of them as young men was created with their agreement and collaboration.\nAlso on show is her Fridge Still Life\, which has not been on public display previously\, alongside other works by Wright and objects from the Ashmolean’s own collection. \nSeveral works by the artist relate both to the domestic and the Museum itself\, and in doing so continue the exploration of time\, memory and identity. \nTwo key Ashmolean pieces that speak directly to Wright’s work are included in the exhibition: the fragments of a young Hercules defeating the Nemean Lion in plaster and Rachel Ruysch’s intricate painting\, ‘A Forest Floor’ Still Life of Flowers.

SUMMARY:FRENCH ARTIST COMMUNITIES TALK 3: VAN GOGH & GAUGUIN
DESCRIPTION:With Juliet Heslewood\, Author and Art Historian \nThe third in a series of four talks examining four communities of French artists: The Barbizon school\, the Painters of Pont Aven. Van Gogh and Gauguin in Arles\, and The Fauves – the ‘Wild Beasts’ of the Mediterranean. \nWhile living in Provence\, Van Gogh heard news of Gauguin’s experience of Brittany. He looked forward to creating a similar kind of colony\, a ‘studio of the south’ and his letters reveal these hopes and the names of those artists in Paris he felt sure would join him in Arles. \nHis brother Theo\, detecting some urgency in his plan\, encouraged Gauguin to join Van Gogh. The two artists lived together for only a few months – often setting off to paint the same views of the town and its surroundings\, as well as neighbours. \nTheir output reveals more of their dissimilarities than any constructive collaboration.  The talk will include much quotation from both men’s letters.
