Starting with a panel discussion on non-hetero normative zoology\, humour and diversity in biology with George\, Jazmeen Isa Qureshi\, Connor Butler and Ross Brookes\, we then invite you to explore the Museum\, visit our bar and chat with our experts about specimens before returning to the lecture theatre for a WIP of George’s new show. \nA slow\, slimy exploration of trans-masculinity\, hormones and being a pest. Celebrate soft bellies\, sensuality\, rotting and renewal in this drag-comedy that offers queer alternatives for anyone with a body. \nSnail Trail is about living in a body that conflicts with the world around you. It’s about revelling in the sticky oozing slimy bits of existence and finding the joy in being repulsive. It’s a manifesto for the pests and the creepy crawlies among us. It’s an invitation to slow down and touch and taste and feel and rub all up against the world\, snog with your entire soft body and make sure to leave a shimmery trail everywhere you go. \nIt’s about building our bodies into homes and repairing the cracks in our armour. It’s about compost and regrowth and vegetables. This beginner-friendly introductory session explores the fundamental techniques of this traditional craft. You’ll work with metal threads and purl bullions\, learning techniques such as pearl purl\, chipping and S’ing to complete a wheat sprig design inspired by a historic harvest knot. Guided by Hand & Lock’s expert embroiderers\, this relaxed and welcoming workshop is perfect for those new to goldwork embroidery. \n\nAbout our Tutors\n\nOur embroidery courses are taught by expert hand embroiderers who have worked in the couture industry for brands such as Alexander McQueen\, Chanel\, Dior\, Valentino\, Hermès\, Louis Vuitton\, YSL\, Givenchy\, Dolce & Gabbana\, Schiaparelli\, Lanvin and Burberry to name a few. The course will cover the basics\, insider tips and practical application making sure students are fully equipped to go on and apply what they have learned to their own pieces and develop their own unique styles. Our tutors are professional embroiderers first and tutors second which means they are able to give you a unique insight into the magical world of couture hand embroidery.\n\nAbout Hand & Lock\n\nHand & Lock’s rich history dates back to 1767 when M. Hand\, a young Huguenot refugee from France\, arrived in London and began selling lace to military tailors. As his reputation grew\, M. Hand expanded his business to include the design and manufacture of military badges and uniform accoutrements. His expertise in embellishing officers’ dress uniforms\, which required precision and craftsmanship\, quickly made M. Hand & Co. a trusted name among Savile Row and military tailors—a relationship that endures over 250 years later.In the 1950s\, Stanley Lock\, a gifted embroidery designer\, joined CE Phipps & Co.\, a specialist embroidery house. When the owner retired in 1956\, Lock acquired the business and rebranded it as S. Lock Ltd. The company soon became a key collaborator for haute couture designers like Christian Dior\, Norman Hartnell\, and Hardy Amies\, working on garments for the Queen\, Queen Mother\, and later\, Princess Diana. In recognition of its exceptional craftsmanship\, the company was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1972. \nToday\, Hand & Lock continues to serve a diverse clientele\, including international fashion houses\, emerging designers\, interior decorators\, the Royal Family\, and costume designers for theatre\, film\, and television. Despite its evolution\, the company prides itself on preserving the traditional embroidery techniques that have remained largely unchanged since 1767. \nHand & Lock is not just a hub of expert craftsmanship but also a global ambassador for the fine art of embroidery. DESCRIPTION:Visible Mending Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £40 \nMembers £32  \nAbout the Workshop\nLearn the art of visible mending with Rosie Leech and repair your own jumper with wool in a contrasting colour. This is a beautiful way to bring new life to old clothes\, turning a rip or hole into a feature. Please note that this workshop is for wool repair only. \nBYOJ (Bring Your Own Jumper)\nParticipants in this workshop will need to bring their own woolly jumper\, hat or socks (with holes) for mending. Coloured darning wool\, needles and darning mushrooms will be provided and you will be shown how to repair holes by creating beautiful patterns using the techniques of darning. \nAbout Rosie\nRosie Leech is a clothes restorer and illustrator living in Oxford. She has been sewing since the age of six and took up darning several years ago\, when her favourite yellow jumper went into holes. She now darns as a freelancer\, using traditional woven darns for holes\, Swiss darning for worn areas and boro and sashika for cotton clothing. She mostly works with visible repairs\, making a feature out of the mends themselves.

DESCRIPTION:Tickets – £5 (Book Online)\nAbout the event\n‘Sounds in Stone’ is a concert inspired by the museum’s collections\, with music reflecting the story of life\, our planet\, and the universe beyond. Centered on voice and piano\, with special arrangements for oboe\, viola\, and violin\, the programme spans classical and contemporary works—from Copland’s reflections on nature to Britten’s seascapes and Björk’s haunting Jóga. Performed by musicians from the European Space Agency’s climate team\, led by mezzo-soprano Susanne Mecklenburg with pianist William Hancox\, this concert offers a rare meeting of scientific insight and musical expression. Join us for an evening where the history of life resonates through sound as well as stone and stars. The musical pieces will be introduced with specimens that inspired their choice by two of the Museum’s geological research and collections staff; Dr. Ross Anderson and Dr. Duncan Murdock. The event includes a bar and a chance to explore the collections with a drink after dark. \n\nAbout the speaker\nSusanne Mecklenburg\nSusanne performs regularly as a soloist\, giving recitals in Italy\, Switzerland\, Germany and the UK. She came to singing later in life\, consequently her vocal training did not follow the conventional route. Even though she grew up in a musical family in Dresden and learnt classical Spanish guitar at an early age\, she decided to take up a scientific career. After graduating in natural sciences\, Susanne moved to Zurich where she obtained a PhD from the Swiss Institute for Technology. It was there that she returned to music\, receiving vocal training and singing in various music ensembles. In 2001 she moved to England to pursue her scientific career and met her pianist William Hancox at the Dartington International Summer School. From 2007 to 2019 Susanne lived outside Rome\, pursuing both her scientific and musical careers – the former as a Mission Manager for the European Space Agency’s Satellites. Since 2019 she has lived in the UK\, heading ESA’s Climate Office. \nWilliam Hancox \nAfter a degree at Cambridge\, William studied with Joseph Weingarten\, a student of Dohnanyi\, Bartok and Kodaly. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician throughout the UK and internationally\, broadcast for Classic FM and the BBC and made a number of recordings. He was a staff pianist at the Guildhall School\, Trinity College of Music and the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh. \nWilliam has performed throughout Europe and made several trips to China\, giving masterclasses and concerts in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. DESCRIPTION:Tickets: \nConcessions – £35.00 \nMembers – £45.00 \nNon-Members – £55 \n  \nAbout the event\nIn this popular one-day Foundation Course\, expert tracker Bob Cowley will introduce you to all the most common Mammal Tracks and Signs that you might come across when walking in the British countryside\, revealing the wildlife with which we share our space. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced naturalist\, this course will open your eyes to the wide range of Tracks and Signs in the world around you\, and provide you with a systematic approach to interpreting them correctly. Bob will use an innovative combination of PowerPoint presentations together with the study of actual specimens from the Museum collection to help you visualise and associate the different animals with their different tracks. \nBob is also well known for the range of useful verbal mnemonics and visual tricks that he has devised to ensure that all the important information will stick in your mind long after the course has ended. Finally\, Bob will lead a guided walk to show you how to find and interpret examples in the real world. \nBeginner/Intermediate level: This event can be attended by people who have little to no pre-existing knowledge of the topic\, but is also ideal for those with experience who may not have attended a formal course and wish to develop their understanding. \nA CPD certificate will be available on completion of the course. \nThis workshop is run in support of the Mammal Society with all proceeds going to support their conservation work. \n\nRefreshments? – No. Attendees are asked to make their own arrangements for lunch. The Museum has a well-stocked café with a range of fresh food available. \nAbout the instructor\nBob Cowley has always been fascinated by the Tracks & Signs that animals leave behind as evidence of their presence. And since the International Tracker Certification scheme (also known as CyberTracker) reached the UK in 2012\, Bob has been one of its most active participants and advocates. He is now one of the few ‘Level 3 Trackers’ in Europe\, having been certified at that level in both the tracking disciplines\, ‘Track and Sign’ and ‘Trailing’. \nAs well as learning all he can about this neglected ancient skill\, Bob is equally committed to passing on that knowledge. A good understanding of ‘Track and Sign’ is an invaluable asset for any professional ecologist\, zoological researcher or student\, as well as being an excellent way of connecting people to the wildlife that lives around them. \nIn addition to the Mammal Society\, Bob has led workshops for a variety of other local and national organisations\, including the Field Studies Council\, the Woodland Trust\, and Oxford University. He has also been an invited speaker at the International Tracking Symposium every year since its inception in 2022\, and is in daily contact with other elite trackers from all over the world. \nBob has been involved in the Oxfordshire Mammal Group since its formation in 2014\, currently serving as Vice Chair. DESCRIPTION:Tickets – FREE  \n(Book Online) \nAbout the event\nIn the halls of natural history museums all over the world\, you can peer through the glass and come face-to-face with the ghosts of extinction. Extinction has been going on as long as there has been biological life\, in fact over 99% of all species that have ever existed on Earth are extinct-but extinction usually happen at a slow place. We are now\, however\, living through the Sixth Mass Extinction\, with species rapidly going extinct because of human actions. These are the ghosts of extinction in the museum. \nIn this talk\, based on her new book ‘Ghosts Behind Glass’\, Dolly Jørgensen takes visitors with her to encounter the extinct. Journeying through the halls of over 80 museums worldwide\, she identified trends\, similarities\, and differences in display techniques and storytelling with remains of the extinct. In conversation with the Oxford University Museum of Natural History’s own displays\, listeners will learn about the challenges of encountering extinction and the potential for them to raise awareness of the connections between humans and nonhumans over time. Dolly’s talk will be followed by a chance to meet her and view some of the iconic\, now extinct species\, that the Museum holds and buy signed copies of her latest book. \nAbout the speaker\nDolly Jørgensen is Professor of History at the University of Stavanger in Norway\, specializing in environmental history and environmental humanities. Her current research agenda focuses on cultural histories of animals. DESCRIPTION:Tickets:\nOMG Members – FREE \nNon-Members – £3 (Paid on the door) \n\nAbout the event\nDr Claire Cardinal conducts interdisciplinary research that integrates ecological and ethnographic methods to explore relationships between humans and other animals. Her recent work focuses on the interactions between people who live at the forest frontier in rural Madagascar and the wild mammals with whom they share the landscape. In this talk she will discuss the impacts of conservation initiatives on three groups of Malagasy mammal – subsistence farmers\, lemurs and small carnivores – and highlight conflicts that arise from their sympatric relationships. \nAbout the speaker\nClaire is a Visiting Research Fellow and Associate Lecturer in Primatology at Oxford Brookes University. She originally trained as a Town and Country Planner and worked for two decades managing urban regeneration programmes in the north-east of England. Since making a career change into wildlife conservation 12 years ago\, she has worked in zoos and animal rescue centres in the UK and tropics\, conducted applied research in Asia and Madagascar\, and graduated with a Master’s and PhD in Primate Conservation.
