DESCRIPTION:Tickets: \nConcessions – £35.00 \nMembers – £45.00 \nNon-Members – £55 \n  \nAbout the event\nIn this popular one-day Foundation Course\, expert tracker Bob Cowley will introduce you to all the most common Mammal Tracks and Signs that you might come across when walking in the British countryside\, revealing the wildlife with which we share our space. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced naturalist\, this course will open your eyes to the wide range of Tracks and Signs in the world around you\, and provide you with a systematic approach to interpreting them correctly. Bob will use an innovative combination of PowerPoint presentations together with the study of actual specimens from the Museum collection to help you visualise and associate the different animals with their different tracks. \nBob is also well known for the range of useful verbal mnemonics and visual tricks that he has devised to ensure that all the important information will stick in your mind long after the course has ended. Finally\, Bob will lead a guided walk to show you how to find and interpret examples in the real world. \nBeginner/Intermediate level: This event can be attended by people who have little to no pre-existing knowledge of the topic\, but is also ideal for those with experience who may not have attended a formal course and wish to develop their understanding. \nA CPD certificate will be available on completion of the course. \nThis workshop is run in support of the Mammal Society with all proceeds going to support their conservation work. \n\nRefreshments? – No. Attendees are asked to make their own arrangements for lunch. The Museum has a well-stocked café with a range of fresh food available. \nAbout the instructor\nBob Cowley has always been fascinated by the Tracks & Signs that animals leave behind as evidence of their presence. And since the International Tracker Certification scheme (also known as CyberTracker) reached the UK in 2012\, Bob has been one of its most active participants and advocates. He is now one of the few ‘Level 3 Trackers’ in Europe\, having been certified at that level in both the tracking disciplines\, ‘Track and Sign’ and ‘Trailing’. \nAs well as learning all he can about this neglected ancient skill\, Bob is equally committed to passing on that knowledge. A good understanding of ‘Track and Sign’ is an invaluable asset for any professional ecologist\, zoological researcher or student\, as well as being an excellent way of connecting people to the wildlife that lives around them. \nIn addition to the Mammal Society\, Bob has led workshops for a variety of other local and national organisations\, including the Field Studies Council\, the Woodland Trust\, and Oxford University. He has also been an invited speaker at the International Tracking Symposium every year since its inception in 2022\, and is in daily contact with other elite trackers from all over the world. \nBob has been involved in the Oxfordshire Mammal Group since its formation in 2014\, currently serving as Vice Chair. SUMMARY:Dead as a Dodo: The Haunted Heritage of Extinction
DESCRIPTION:Tickets – FREE  \n(Book Online) \nAbout the event\nIn the halls of natural history museums all over the world\, you can peer through the glass and come face-to-face with the ghosts of extinction. Extinction has been going on as long as there has been biological life\, in fact over 99% of all species that have ever existed on Earth are extinct-but extinction usually happen at a slow place. We are now\, however\, living through the Sixth Mass Extinction\, with species rapidly going extinct because of human actions. These are the ghosts of extinction in the museum. \nIn this talk\, based on her new book ‘Ghosts Behind Glass’\, Dolly Jørgensen takes visitors with her to encounter the extinct. Journeying through the halls of over 80 museums worldwide\, she identified trends\, similarities\, and differences in display techniques and storytelling with remains of the extinct. In conversation with the Oxford University Museum of Natural History’s own displays\, listeners will learn about the challenges of encountering extinction and the potential for them to raise awareness of the connections between humans and nonhumans over time. Dolly’s talk will be followed by a chance to meet her and view some of the iconic\, now extinct species\, that the Museum holds and buy signed copies of her latest book. \nAbout the speaker\nDolly Jørgensen is Professor of History at the University of Stavanger in Norway\, specializing in environmental history and environmental humanities. Her current research agenda focuses on cultural histories of animals. DESCRIPTION:Tickets:\nOMG Members – FREE \nNon-Members – £3 (Paid on the door) \n\nAbout the event\nDr Claire Cardinal conducts interdisciplinary research that integrates ecological and ethnographic methods to explore relationships between humans and other animals. Her recent work focuses on the interactions between people who live at the forest frontier in rural Madagascar and the wild mammals with whom they share the landscape. In this talk she will discuss the impacts of conservation initiatives on three groups of Malagasy mammal – subsistence farmers\, lemurs and small carnivores – and highlight conflicts that arise from their sympatric relationships. \nAbout the speaker\nClaire is a Visiting Research Fellow and Associate Lecturer in Primatology at Oxford Brookes University. She originally trained as a Town and Country Planner and worked for two decades managing urban regeneration programmes in the north-east of England. Since making a career change into wildlife conservation 12 years ago\, she has worked in zoos and animal rescue centres in the UK and tropics\, conducted applied research in Asia and Madagascar\, and graduated with a Master’s and PhD in Primate Conservation.
