SUMMARY:Writing Hawa
DESCRIPTION:Filmed over five years\, Writing Hawa is the story of three generations of Hazara women from the same family in Afghanistan.\nWith unique access\, director Najiba Noori films her mother Hawa and her niece Zahra in their aspirations to emancipate themselves from patriarchal traditions. \nForced into marriage as a child\, Hawa is already 52 years old when she can truly start learning to read and write. With the support of her daughter\, she opens a small textile business. However\, the takeover by the Taliban in August 2021 turns the lives of the family upside down. \nThe screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion with members of the Afghan Visual Arts and History (AVAH) collective. \nPart of the Afghanistan Reframed screening day.  \n  \nAbout Afghanistan Reframed\nBringing together rarely seen films from Afghanistan’s cinematic archive with contemporary works\, this festival explores the country through the eyes of its filmmakers at home and across the diaspora.

SUMMARY:Yomi Ṣode: The Hatching
DESCRIPTION:What are we born into? What do we inherit\, carry\, and what are we burdened with?\nThe Hatching is an experimental and interactive new performance from award-winning poet and playwright Yomi Ṣode\, exploring the layered themes of belonging\, identity\, and responsibility in a world that isn’t equal. Directed by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu\, with a soundscape and live underscore by DJ Rewyld the show blends words\, sound and movement in a single audio-visual experience. \nTold in three parts\, Ou Topos (no place)\, Eu Topos (good place)\, and The Custodians\, The Hatching asks what it means to be born into systems we didn’t choose. It examines structures like law\, media\, and politics\, while also reflecting on the moral and personal choices we make within them. \nYomi will draw from his poetry collection Manorism\, alongside new work\, with guest poets and performers Jerome Scott\, Rae Zoe and Noah Ṣode adding their own voices to consider how the roles we play today might shape the future. \nThis is not just a performance. It is a space for reflection\, reckoning\, and radical imagination. \nPart of Utopia Now!\, a season exploring the role of the arts in making a better future possible. \n
