SUMMARY:Mozart: Bliss Beside Us
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned choreographer Andreas Heise brings the songs and piano music of Mozart to life in a stunning fusion of movement\, words and music.\nEminent soprano Juliane Banse trained as a dancer before embarking on her singing career\, making her uniquely able to interact with and complement the dancer István Simon\, who has been a Principal Dancer in Budapest\, Dresden and Dortmund. They are joined by Alexander Krichel\, one of today’s leading pianists and a former ECHO Klassik winner. Costumes are designed by the luxury brand UY Studio. The programme includes some of Mozart’s best-loved songs and a complete performance of his Sonata in F\, K332. This is a welcome return to Oxford International Song Festival for this artistic team whose performance of Schubert’s Winterreise in 2023 was an unforgettable occasion.

DESCRIPTION:Opening the film series is a surrealist black comedy from the Spanish-Mexican master Luis Buñuel.\nThe Exterminating Angel mocks the ‘utopia’ of aristocratic and bourgeoise belonging: The servants mysteriously abandon a lavish dinner party\, the guests find themselves unable to leave the mansion\, and an eerie\, allegorical class satire ensues. \nThe screening will be introduced by Professor Reidar Due\, University Lecturer in European Cinema and Tutorial Fellow in French at Magdalen College\, Oxford. A convener of Oxford’s MSt in Film Aesthetics\, Professor Due works on philosophical film aesthetics and the ethics of political life\, including alienation\, dignity and the ideals of democracy. These questions sit right at the heart of Buñuel’s dinner party that no one can leave. \nPart of Utopia Now!\, a season exploring the role of the arts in making a better future possible. \n  \nAbout the Laughing at Utopia Film Series\nThis film series\, curated by the TORCH Humour Network in collaboration with Ultimate Picture Palace\, Oxford’s oldest independent cinema\, explores the playful and provocative relationship between utopia and satire.

SUMMARY:Roderick Williams: Love's Minstrels
DESCRIPTION:A beautifully crafted programme from two master musicians.\nRoderick Williams’ appearances at Oxford International Song Festival are always eagerly anticipated and this recital is sure to be a highlight of the year. The typically inventive programme tells stories of courtly love across the ages. It ranges from the medieval pen of Guillaume de Machaut\, expressing his love and fidelity\, via the Romantic poetry of Eichendorff with its evocations of ruined castles and mystic knights\, to the beauty of 20th-century songs from England and Ireland by the likes of Ina Boyle and Ralph Vaughan Williams. \n  \nEmerging Artists\nAt the start of this evening’s concert\, and at most of our evening concerts in the first week of the Festival\, one of our eight exceptional Young Artist duos will give a 15-minute showcase performance. These emerging professionals are the stars of the future\, and can also be heard during the Mastercourse later in the Festival.

This brilliant young virtuoso performs Beethoven’s first Piano Sonata in F minor\, and Schumann’s breathtaking Carnaval\, a sequence of 21 short pieces written in 1825 and representing the many and varied characters at a masked ball.

DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nJoin us for A.E. Stallings’ next Professor of Poetry lecture on 29 January at 5.30pm in the Theatre at the Schwarzman Centre. \n\n\n\n\nA.E. Stallings is an American poet who studied Classics at the University of Georgia and Oxford. She has published four collections of poetry\, Archaic Smile\, Hapax\, and Olives\, and most recently\, Like\, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She has published three verse translations\, Lucretius’s The Nature of Things (in rhyming fourteeners!)\, Hesiod’s Works and Days\, and an illustrated The Battle Between the Frogs and the Mice. A selected poems\, This Afterlife\, is just out from FSG in the US and Carcanet in the UK.
