SUMMARY:Song of Myself (Display)
DESCRIPTION:Song of Myself\, 1995\, Tom Phillips RA (1937–2022)\, wire\, 360 x 180 cm.\nCredit: Estate of Tom Phillips CBE RA \nTom Phillips described Song of Myself as “an attempt to list the various identities that go to make a single artistic life”. The work borrows its title from a poem in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Its beginning is based on the confessional Anglo-Saxon poem\, The Seafarer\, which Phillips first came across as an undergraduate at St Catherine’s College\, Oxford. \nWithin the work\, the alert reader will find further references\, direct or cryptic\, to Homer\, Plato\, Dante\, Cervantes\, Shakespeare\, Marvell\, Conrad\, R. L. Stevenson; to the music of Wagner and Robert Schumann; and to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. The text is littered with echoes of Phillips’s own artistic preoccupations: as a painter\, calligrapher\, user of stencils and maker of books. \nPhillips first made a pencil drawing of the text\, then worked with the fabricator Leo Verryt to realise the work in wire\, as a hanging poem. Other versions of the text exist\, one in a series of paintings called Curriculum Vitae (No XX\, 1992)\, and another in Self Portrait in Silver (2004). Phillips writes: “The unity of the piece in which letters are tortured into cooperation hopes to reflect an overall homogeneity in the spirit of its maker”. \nThe Bodleian Libraries also has the Tom Phillips archive in our collection.

DESCRIPTION:About the talks\nAdventure into Wonderland with Oxford’s annual celebration of all things Alice on Alice’s Day. \nAs 2026 marks 150 years since the publication of ‘The Snark’\, the Weston Library will be hosting a series of talks themed around Nonsense Poetry from the Lewis Carroll Society\, as well as a special screening of the 2023 film The Hunting of the Snark by Simon DaVison. \nFind out more about our Alice’s Day celebrations at the Weston Library\, or browse the full programme for 2026. \nLewis Carroll’s ‘Useful and Instructive’ limericks\nMark Davies\, Lewis Carroll Society | 10.45 – 11.25 \nFour limericks by Lewis Carroll which were recently discovered by the speaker are unusual and revealing because they relate to real people (such as the ‘raw Don’ above). The Oxford acquaintances in question were tactfully unidentified\, so it was a riddle of sorts to deduce that one of them has particularly intimate Wonderland associations. Carroll had first experimented with the humorous five-line format in a family magazine he produced as a boy\, even before Edward Lear popularised the concept. \n“Say ‘How D’Ye Do?’ and Shake Hands”\nMatt Crandall\, Disney Alice collector and author | 11.30 – 12.10 \nHow Lewis Carroll’s verses helped Walt Disney sell Alice in Wonderland. On the 75th anniversary of Walt Disney’s animated film\, an exploration of the songs inspired by verse and text from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass\, and their importance to the film’s marketing and merchandise. \nLewis Carroll\, Darwin\, and The Hunting of the Snark\nStephen Thetford\, Lewis Carroll Society | 12.15 – 12.55 \nStarting with a copy of The Annotated Snark in 1974\, the speaker has spent years discovering the historical and scientific background to Lewis Carroll’s wonderful ‘nonsense’ poem. The motley crew going on a Snark hunt mimic the Pickwickian comic gentlemen of Dickens\, sailing on a quest that parodies Darwin’s The Voyage of the Beagle. Carroll’s illustrator\, Henry Holiday\, was an experienced science artist who could caricature Victorian explorations such as the survey of the world’s oceans by HMS Challenger. Together they created a masterpiece. \nThe Hunting of the Snark: a 2023 film by Simon DaVison\n13.45 – 15.30 | Film duration 90 minutes\, rated PG \n‘The Hunting of the Snark’ is a feature film based on Lewis Carroll’s follow-up to the Alice books. Set on a tropical island\, it is a brilliant\, wonderland mix of nonsense\, twisted logic and surreal adventure. It also has at its core a powerful and emotional quest – the human search for meaning and an understanding of the universe. What is the Snark? Why is it always so elusive? The film stars Ramon Tikaram (‘Kaos’\, ‘Game of Thrones’) and Corinne Furman (‘Fisherman’s Friends’). \nFilm screening includes introduction and Q&A with the director\, Simon DaVison. \nEvent information\n\nThese activities take place in person in the Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre at the Weston Library.\nThe Weston Library is wheelchair accessible. Find out more about accessibility at our site.\nPlease note: only bottled water is permitted in the lecture theatre. But why do we want tame wolves in our homes or wild cats on our laps? \nThis exhibition explores the relationship between humans and their pets – or pets and their humans. \nPets & their People draws on depictions of pets in stories\, imagery and poetry in the Bodleian’s collection – from one of the earliest recorded depictions of an assistance dog for the blind to a rare copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that has never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition asks how the special bond between owners and their pets has evolved over time\, and what that evolution tells us about who we really are. \nAre we taming our pets\, or are they bring us back to our wild roots? \nCurators\nCharles Foster\, Fellow of Exeter College and bestselling author of Being a Beast \nAcknowledgements\nPets & their People is made possible with generous support from the John S Cohen Foundation.

SUMMARY:Rare Books Summer School: Keynote Lecture The Cotton Genesis and Early Christian Art
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThis lecture examines the fifth century Cotton Genesis (BL Codex Cotton Otho B.IV)\, a major illuminated manuscript which now survives only as charred fragments after the 1731 Ashburnham House fire. New multispectral photography at the British Library has revealed interesting new information about the manuscript. \nThe lecture explores what these remnants reveal when compared with other early illustrated books and Genesis image cycles on materials like papyrus and cloth\, enabling us to learn about the origins of the illustrated codex and the development of narrative imagery in early Christian art. \nThe lecture will be followed by refreshments. \nSpeaker\nProfessor Jaś Elsner \nEvent information\n\nThis event takes place in person in the Sir Victor Blank Lecture Theatre at the Weston Library.\nThe Weston Library is wheelchair accessible. Find out more about accessibility at our site.\nPlease note: only bottled water is permitted in the lecture theatre.
